Comparison of summer tires R17, test. The national rating of summer tires r17 has been announced: user reviews and advice Which tires most often occupy a leading position in the ranking

Everything is not the same as in Europe with its good roads. For example, there are the most common ones, this is the entry level for new golf-class cars. And we usually wear powerful versions in such shoes. And it is also the most affordable and common tuning: on wide "bast shoes" even an inexpensive car looks much cooler.

There is a demand - there will be an offer. The choice of such tires in our market is huge. Almost all brands are represented in this dimension - from top to cheap.

Wider circle

We haven't had such a young "team" for a long time: we are testing nine out of twelve tires for the first time!

You can’t do without top models, because it is they who set the top bar in the final results. To our great regret, the new tires and the updated Pirelli P Zero did not have time to get to the test (I had to be content with the model of the previous generation at a price of 8300 rubles apiece, made in Italy). But we have a couple of other top new products - German-made Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tires (6500 rubles) and Nokian Hakka Blue 2 (6200 rubles). The latter is still of Finnish origin, but in the near future its production will be transferred to Russian Vsevolozhsk.

We could not refuse tires that were in the lead in last year's test - these are Hankook Ventus S1 evo2, designed in Korea, but made in Hungary (5700 rubles). The Land of the Rising Sun is represented by the new Toyo Proxes Sport tire (5900 rubles), made in Japan and debuting this season on our market in a limited number of sizes. Another "Japanese", but of Thai origin - Dunlop SP Sport FM800 (5400 rubles).

Matador Hectorra 3, aka MP 47, is a model of the budget brand of Continental; made in France, sold for 5000 rubles. Last year's novelty Nordman SZ Russian "cooking" is slightly cheaper: 4900 rubles. Among the budget - completely domestic Cordiant Sport 3 for 4700 rubles. The model is far from new, but it has just appeared in this size.

Of great interest to readers are the Chinese tires GT Radial SportActive (4500 rubles) and Triangle Sportex TSH11 (4000 rubles). And closes the list of Belshina Artmotion HP from Belarus (4000 rubles). Experienced motorists will surely remember that in Soviet times Belarusian tires were well-deservedly popular.

The carrier car was chosen to match the test participants -. Almost all tire manufacturers use a sedan built on the Golf platform in their internal tests, since it is characterized by clear reactions, a good balance of handling and relationship with the driver.

The tests were carried out at the end of the summer of 2016. The weather was hot, the air temperature fluctuated from 22 to 37 degrees. The test site is the central strip of Russia, the Volga region, the AVTOVAZ test site, located on the border of the Samara and Ulyanovsk regions.

On your marks

We start testing when calm weather sets in. We start with, combining several consecutive tests - this way we can save time on rearranging the wheels.

The first and most precise test is the evaluation of rolling resistance.

First, we warm up the car and tires, moving at a speed of 120-130 km / h along the special roads of the landfill. While driving, experts evaluate the Jetta's road holding at high speeds, making gentle lane changes to understand how the tires affect the behavior of the car. In the summer, ten kilometers, or one full circle, along the high-speed ring of the AVTOVAZ test site is enough for the eyes to warm up the tires and all units of the test car, evaluate its behavior at high speed and set preliminary estimates for the noise level and ride smoothness.

The Jetta's best handling at high speeds is provided by Pirelli tires: on them, the car perfectly holds the given direction, without requiring adjustment, and shows very clear reactions at the slightest turn of the steering wheel. At the same time, a dense, heavy steering wheel with excellent information content allows you to understand, even with your eyes closed, by the increasing effort on the steering wheel, how much you turn the steering wheel and how far the car goes to the side. An honestly deserved nine points - we rarely give such an assessment!

Belshina turned out to be the most insecure in this exercise - Jetta immediately formed a blurry “zero”, the steering wheel became empty, yaws along the road began. When adjusting the direction - delays in reactions, large steering angles and unpleasant steering of the rear axle in corners - it looks like it will break into a skid. Usually such an effect is given very much.

The tires are warmed up - it's time to start measuring, which we carry out on a two-kilometer horizontal and straight section of the expressway. Three or four double "runs" in opposite directions, and we have the first results. Every few sets of tires, we again check those tires that were assigned as the base ones - if the temperature of the air and asphalt changes by two or three degrees, you need to make a run on the base tires every three test tires, and if the temperature changes by four to five degrees - every two. This is necessary for the subsequent correction of the obtained measurements. And already at the end of the day we determine the final results by recalculating those obtained, taking into account changes in the data of periodic measurements of the "stove" (that is, in the results shown on the base tires).

GT Radial, Matador and Nokian turned out to be the most economical of all - with them, the Jetta has the most modest consumption at city and suburban speed limits. The Jetta looks a little paler on Triangle tires - this model competes with the top three only at 60 km / h, and at the “country” speed it is inferior to 0.1 l / 100 km.

Behind everyone is Cordiant: it loses to the leaders two "tens" per hundred at the suburban speed limit, and four - at the city speed limit. Of course, the difference is insignificant, but it is there.

Now a pit, now a ditch

Now we move to the northwestern sector of the landfill, to a special road with cracks and potholes. We carry out races at speeds from 30 to 90 km / h to evaluate how the ride and interior noise change.

The results are quite natural: wide low-profile tires, due to their design features, are usually noisy and hard. Therefore, six participants "made noise" only by six points, and five earned seven. Only Nokian (for low noise level) and Goodyear (for smooth running) received eight points (rating "norm").

The GT Radial tires were the toughest - impressive jolts and strong vibrations from road bumps run along the floor of the body, seats and controls. And these are the only tires on which the Jetta has .

Before replacing a set of wheels, drivers move off the asphalt onto a loose primer. Here, on a 12 percent rise, starting and moving with varying degrees of slippage, experts evaluate the effectiveness of traction in various modes. This information is useful for those who have a piece of country road on their way to their dacha. The results do not go to the final standings - we give them for reference only.

The Cordiant, Matador, Hankook and Pirelli tires are the most confident rowing on a dirt slope - all received seven points. And Goodyear, GT Radial and Toyo slip more than the rest - experts gave them five points each. He who is born to fly cannot crawl!

Stop - one, two ...

The assessment of braking properties is associated with increased tire wear. Despite the presence, during sudden braking, the front edges of the checkers are slightly rounded. For this reason, we first brake on wet pavement, where the coefficient of adhesion is lower, and therefore the tires “spoil” less, then we repeat the test on dry. But the procedures are similar on both surfaces.

First, we “clean up” the braking lane clamped by the cones, having made 15–20 braking on non-recordable tires, - we remove dust and small pebbles from the trajectory, on which the car can “slip”. And only then we perform from six to eight braking on a test set, each time carefully cooling the brake mechanisms with a long idle circle.

The starting speed of braking on wet pavement is 80 km/h, on dry pavement - 100 km/h (these are the standard "pegs" in all tire tests). We finish the measurement when the speed drops to 5 km / h, since at a lower speed the ABS does not work correctly - the automation does not always have time to brake the wheels, and skid, as you know, lengthens. The VBOX measuring complex, which operates based on data from GPS and GLONASS satellites, allows you to fix the stopping distance with high accuracy. The main thing is to have a clear sky above your head.

When braking, Pirelli beats everyone, as they say, in one goal - both on wet roads and on dry ones. On wet pavement, Nokian repeats its performance, but on dry pavement it loses a little more than a meter, falling back to fourth position. On dry land, the second result with a gap of 0.4 meters from the leader is for Goodyear tires. It is noteworthy that according to the results of both “dry” and “wet” braking, the same tires gathered in the top four - Hankook joined the three above.

Matador tires have the longest braking distance on wet pavement: they are more than four meters behind the leader. On the dry trail behind all Cordiant, losing almost four meters to the leader.

It is curious that on dry surfaces the difference between the participants is a little more than 10%. In the wet, the gap is more significant - over 15%. It is wet asphalt that is a stumbling block when manufacturers are looking for a compromise between results and costs (development and production of mixtures, cost of components).

Jumping to the side

It remains to check how the subjects relate to. On our roads, this is extremely important - otherwise how to go around the pits? The key to success is quick reactions to steering turns, stability and mutual understanding between the driver and the car. The “rearrangement” or “single lane change” maneuver helps us to simulate such a situation.

We perform the shortest (and, accordingly, the slowest) of the former Gost exercises for assessing the controllability of a car: the length of the corridor in which you need to change lanes is only 12 meters. There are also 16-, 20- and 24-meter “rearrangements”, but in the shortest tires they are loaded with lateral forces as much as possible, since the maneuver is the sharpest, with large steering angles.

The “rearrangement” exercise is performed twice - on wet pavement and on dry pavement. In both cases, the tester does 15-20 repetitions, consistently increasing the speed. As a result, we obtain the maximum value at which the car remains within the entrance corridor without knocking down the poles. The vehicle speed in the exit corridor is recorded by an impartial VBOX.

Jetta showed the highest speed on wet surfaces on Pirelli tires, on dry surfaces - on Hankook tires. The lowest speed is respectively on tires Matador and Cordiant. Pirelli holds the palm for handling during extreme maneuvering on both surfaces. Experts awarded these tires nine points. Both wet and dry, these tires fill the steering wheel with informative effort, and the Jetta pleases with clear reactions, reliable and understandable behavior, even with very sharp steering actions.

The biggest problems with keeping the car on wet roads arose on Cordiant, GT Radial and Matador tires. The experts noted delays in reactions, increased steering angles and low information content, as well as a dangerous deep skid in the second corridor, requiring the driver to instantly parry the steering wheel.

On dry pavement, it is most difficult to change lanes sharply on Cordiant tires - the comments are the same as on wet pavement, but the skid is not so deep, although it requires immediate correction.

Who will win?

Before summing up, we recall about. This year, we have raised the weight of the braking properties to 500 points (increased to 260 points for wet pavement and up to 240 for dry), reducing the weight of the maximum speed on the rearrangement. The total assessment of the behavior of the car, taking into account directional stability, handling and speed at a rearrangement, pulls 330 points. We believe that now the balance between braking and maneuvering behavior is more logical.

The first place with a significant margin from competitors is occupied by the most “driver” tires that can give pleasure from driving in any conditions and modes. If the wallet allows, and impeccable comfort is not a manic idea, this is the best choice. I wonder what will be the updated Pirelli P Zero tire that hits the market this spring?

The second position is taken by Nokian Hakka Blue 2. It loses quite a bit to the test winner. In terms of performance, it is inferior to just a little, but a little more economical and comfortable. And better value for money. Recommended.

Having scored the same number of points and sharing the third and fourth steps of the extended pedestal, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 and Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 tires were crowded together, also falling into the category of excellent tires. They are very similar to each other in their characteristics, comments on both are minor. When choosing, the scales can swing in favor of the more affordable Hankook.

in the category "very good tires” hit Toyo Proxes Sport (889 points and fifth place), Nordman SZ (882 points) and Dunlop SP Sport FM800 (875 points). In all respects, down to comfort, they are very close. But Toyo provides better directional stability and is more suitable for long trips, and the primer for all tires is acceptable in minimal doses. In terms of price and quality ratio, Nordman is more seductive than the rest.

The next three are from the “good tires” category: Belshina Artmotion HP and Triangle Sportex TSH11, which scored 865 points each and shared eighth-ninth places, as well as the slightly lagging GT Radial SportActive (847 points). Despite the difference in the final scores, both Chinese tires are similar in “character” like twins. The Belshina tire, due to significant comments on directional stability, is recommended only for city speeds, although it slows down a little better than the “twins” on both dry and wet roads. In addition, it is a little more comfortable, which means it is better adapted to rough roads. The “twins” from China (they even have the same braking distances on dry and wet pavement!) will delight you on long trips with a rather high directional stability, but only if the roads are good - both tires do not shine with a smooth ride. All three do not like sharp maneuvering on wet pavement, and the GT Radial does not like it on dry pavement either. However, they have an ace up their sleeve - they contribute. In terms of price-quality ratio, Belshina and Triangle are a little more attractive (both are just right for the minimum budget).

The last lines are occupied by tires Matador Hectorra 3 (834 points) and Cordiant Sport 3 (826 points). They are slightly more expensive than those that have taken higher positions, and at the same time they are inferior to them in opportunities. The Matador's assets include high fuel efficiency, satisfactory directional stability and comfort level, and the most modest braking properties on wet roads are its liabilities. Cordiant boasts satisfactory grip on wet pavement. Confident movement on the primer is provided by both tires.

Summer tires are designed to provide good grip in mild weather conditions, at temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius and above, on wet or dry surfaces.

We studied the quietest and most reliable summer tires in sizes R15, 16, 17 on Yandex.Market, sorting them by popularity and reading user reviews about a particular model. This is how the rating of summer tires 2018 was compiled, which we bring to your attention.

10. Pirelli Cinturato P7

The average price for one tire is 5,923 rubles.

Opens our top 10 with an impressive all-rounder, with stable cornering and short braking distances on wet and dry surfaces. Its advantages include good handling and low noise.

When driving on wet roads, Pirelli tires are perhaps second only to the first number in the rating and resist hydroplaning better than most competitors. As stated in one of the reviews, "in a downpour at 140 km / h they stand tightly."

Flaws: humming is heard at high speed.

By the way, the winter version of Pirelli tires - Ice Zero - leads.

The average cost is 3,497 rubles.

Excellent value for money option. Dry Suction Sipe technology effectively sucks up water from the road, directing it to the main grooves of the tire. Thanks to this, Hakka Blue achieves maximum contact with the road surface. If you often drive on rain-soaked roads or city streets, and are wondering which summer tires to choose in order to be “cheaper and more reliable”, then one of the preferred options is Nokian Hakka Blue. On dry pavement, the tires also behave obediently and predictably.

This rubber does not tan at the first frost, which allows it to be used from early spring to late autumn. The noise level is quite comfortable even at high speed.

Minuses: weak sidewall, high wear.

It costs, on average, 5,586 rubles.

A very balanced tire with excellent grip on both dry and wet road surfaces and relatively low fuel consumption. Rides quietly, doesn't feel rutting, braking is predictable, what more could you want from one of the best summer tires of 2018?

Flaws: when braking hard, it buzzes, a “hernia” can easily form from a blow.

Can be purchased for 5999 rubles.

If the R17 had no other competitors in the ranking of the best summer tires of 2018, this rubber would not have taken the seventh place, but would have entered the top 3, due to its high level of grip on wet surfaces, low fuel consumption, minimal braking distance and safe behavior. on dry roads. In addition, it is quiet on good asphalt, shockproof and not afraid of ruts.

Drawbacks: on coarse and medium-grain pavement, these tires begin to vibrate, the price of R17 and above is high.

Sold for 3,012 rubles.

“Which summer tires are 15 better?” - you ask. The answer is Hakka Green 2. The test of summer tires conducted by Za Rulem magazine put this Russian-made rubber in 1-2 places for the best braking properties on wet road surfaces, the best speed when making a “dry” shift, excellent directional stability and good handling during extreme driving.

Small remarks caused only the comfort of the tires, but this will not really affect driving.

The price, on average, is 4,659 rubles.

These wear-resistant tires confidently hold both dry and wet roads after rain, even at high speeds. They have a strong sidewall, and the Turanza T001 enters the turns like a knife through butter.

However, most of the reviews say that tires are noisy, and its hydroplaning resistance leaves much to be desired. And off-road tires are hardly suitable, if they stretch out on a dirt road in dry weather, then they can get stuck in wet weather.

Offered for 3,368 rubles.

Next in the ranking of summer tires is a quiet, durable and soft rubber that performs well in heavy rain. It withstands a blow if the car gets into a hole at speed, where there is a high risk of breaking a wheel. The wear resistance of this model is at its best, it is quite possible to skate 3-4 seasons on it, while the wear will be less than 50%.

Minuses: on wet grass, dirt and mud, Energy XM2 tires do not ride well.

You can buy for 2,800 rubles.

What summer tires are better on the R16 if you need the optimal cost / reliability ratio? Our answer is the BluEarth-A AE-50. One tire size R16 will cost 3,725 rubles, size R15 is even cheaper.

Advantages of rubber: fast start and braking, good grip on dry and wet roads, decent wear resistance, gently rides uneven surfaces.

Flaws: does not make noise only at temperatures above 20 degrees, on gravel at speeds above 80 km / h it can behave unpredictably.

The average cost is 5,064 rubles.

Solid looking tires that will decorate any car. With external advantages, they also hold the track well (both wet and dry), do not tan when low temperatures, quickly accelerate and decelerate. Keep track even on a dirt road.

disadvantage Nordman SZ tires are noisy, but you can get used to it. And their price is quite high, even for R15 size versions.

1.Continental ContiPremiumContact 5

The average price is 3,011 rubles.

The 2018 summer tire rating R15-R17 is headed by a very popular model from a well-known and respected manufacturer. In addition to its low price, ContiPremiumContact 5 tires are distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • acoustically comfortable;
  • staunchly hold the blows from the pits;
  • good resistance to hydroplaning;
  • excellent braking on wet and dry surfaces;
  • confidently take turns even on wet sections of the track.

For all its advantages, rubber also has its weaknesses. Among them: softness, and, as a result, rapid wear.

How to choose summer tires?

Summer tire rating "Behind the wheel"

And here are the most popular tires that were chosen for the summer season of 2018 by specialists from the authoritative Russian publication Za Rulem. We provide a comparative table of summer tire test results so that you can choose the best option for yourself, based on our recommendations and the opinion of the editors of Za Rulem.

2 3

Tires are one of the most important factors in ensuring the comfort and safety of any vehicle. Neither a powerful engine nor a high-speed gearbox will help a car drive quickly and confidently if bad tires are installed on it. Unfortunately, if almost all motorists understand the need to use high-quality winter tires, then the situation with summer tires is much worse. Many people choose the cheapest summer tires without much interest in their performance apart from the price. And someone drives all year round on winter tires. However, there are good reasons why the seasonality of tires should not be neglected.

Firstly, summer tires are stiffer, which allows them not only to hold the road better, but also to wear out less. Winter tires at positive temperatures heat up too much, which leads to a quick "eating" of the tread.

Secondly, the tread pattern is different. If in winter it is necessary to have a large number of sipes in order to confidently cling to a slippery surface, then in summer it is more important to maintain stability during hydroplaning, and even better to prevent it. In addition, the tread of summer tires is less deep, which increases the stability of the car when cornering. Finally, summer tires are much more economical and quieter.

If we talk about the cost, then the larger the car, the more aggressive the driving style, the more difficult the operating conditions, the more expensive the set of tires will cost. Given the fierce competition among manufacturers, even companies that produce premium products are trying to have several budget options in their lineup. In any case, no matter what price segment the rubber is in, you can list the main selection criteria in descending order of importance:

  1. Stability on the road.
  2. Hydroplaning resistance.
  3. Ride comfort.
  4. Strength.
  5. Wear resistance.
  6. Profitability.
  7. Noise.

It should be understood that there is no absolutely universal rubber. One will handle dry pavement better, another will handle wet pavement, and a third will be quiet but not too stable.

  • popularity with car owners;
  • the number of positive reviews from real buyers;
  • tire test results in independent laboratories;
  • price-quality ratio.

Best Inexpensive Summer Tires

In this category - tires, the maximum landing diameter of which does not exceed 17 inches. This is quite natural, since budget rubber options are usually bought for inexpensive cars, which, in turn, are rarely equipped with large diameter discs.

In addition, it is worth considering that the best of the budget tires can have good basic characteristics- handling, wet grip, softness, but designed almost exclusively for driving on good asphalt and drivers with a restrained driving style. Do not expect high wear resistance or exceptionally low noise from them.

3 Triangle Group TR928

The most budget
Country: China
Average price: 2,700 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.5

A tire from a purely Chinese company has managed to surprise quite a few car owners. Due to the alternation of the size and step of the checkers, the tire clings well to the road. Also pleased with the excellent directional stability provided by the central longitudinal rib.

Triangle Group TR928 is a vivid confirmation that everything cannot be all at once. Due to the high rigidity, the rubber confidently keeps grip with the road surface and has good reliability, excellent resistance to hernias. But on the other hand -most of the small irregularities are felt.

2 Yokohama Blu Earth AE01

Sustainable and economical
A country:
Average price: 3,000 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The development of the famous Japanese brand Yokohama is considered among experienced drivers as one of the most wear-resistant and durable tires in its price segment. Many note a reduction in fuel consumption when using this rubber. Holds confidently on dry and wet roads at reasonable speeds.

Some owners complain about the lack of stability on wet roads - you have to significantly reduce speed. It is better not to use these tires on the primer and grass, their purpose is asphalt.

1Nokian Nordman SX2

The best comfort among inexpensive tires
A country: Finland (produced in Russia)
Average price: 3,190 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.9

The main advantage of this rubber, which is noted by almost all buyers, is its comfort. The tires are soft and have good stability even at high speeds. The other side of the coin is fast, uniform wear, also on excellent roads and a relaxed driving style.

Owners note low noise and a good tread pattern that allows you to feel confident on the track even in heavy rain and believe that the tires have an excellent price-quality ratio.

The best mid-range summer tires

Products from the middle price segment in the vast majority are the perfect combination of price and quality. Tires are no exception. Choosing budget options, you obviously agree to a mediocre option. Premium tires have excellent parameters, but the overpayment is often too high. Figuratively speaking, to get a 5-10% advantage, you will pay 30-40% more.

Mid-range rubber has a fairly good set of characteristics and at the same time does not frighten with its price. In addition, unlike goods in the budget segment, tires in this category are not distinguished by any one parameter, but have fairly balanced characteristics.

4 Toyo Proxes CF2

Better Handling
A country: Country of origin: Japan (manufactured in Malaysia)
Average price: 4 850 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Thanks to a specially designed tread pattern and a well-chosen composition of materials, the tires of this model are stable and quiet. At the same time, most buyers who have already tried it for several seasons are definitely going to buy the next set of the same brand.

It should be noted that these tires are best suited for driving on good asphalt. In such conditions, they behave perfectly both on dry and wet roads - excellent grip and no aquaplaning. If there are pits or other obstacles on the way, care should be taken - the tire bead is quite soft, which has a positive effect on comfort, but reduces strength.

3 Michelin Energy XM2

High sidewall strength
Country: France
Average price: 3,862 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.7

One of the quietest mid-range summer tires is the Michelin Energy XM2. Almost every car owner, listing the advantages of Michelin Energy XM2, points to their low noise. This model is also distinguished by the increased strength of the sidewall, which is very important when driving on Russian roads. The carcass threads are made of materials of increased strength and flexibility, and the unique sidewall design evenly dissipates the load at the moment of impact throughout the entire sidewall structure. This can significantly reduce the risk of hernias (for example, when hitting a deep hole).

The Energy XM2 is also praised for its good grip performance. Rapid drainage of water from the contact patch is achieved through a system of wide drainage channels. The downside is that the tires are only available in 13, 14, 15 and 16 inches.

2 Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31

The optimum ratio of price and quality
Country: South Korea
Average price: 8,700 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Kumho is one of the most popular South Korean brands whose car tires have won the trust of car owners due to such qualities as wear resistance and low noise. A feature of Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 tires (as well as other brand products) is the unique ESCOT technology that allows you to make the sidewall seamless. This eliminates vibration from contact with the road surface at high speeds, improves handling, reduces braking distances and reduces noise.

The rubber compound and tread pattern provide excellent grip on wet roads. According to some reports, the longitudinal annular channels and the V-shaped pattern when creating tires were borrowed from cars participating in Formula 1. Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 is recommended for active driving on good tracks in any weather.

1 Yokohama Geolandar SUV G055

Excellent wear resistance
A country: Japan (manufactured in Russia and the Philippines)
Average price: 7 868 rubles.
Rating (2019): 4.9

When creating the Yokohama Geolandar SUV tires, Japanese engineers used a unique technology for producing a rubber compound using orange oil. Oddly enough, they managed to solve the main task that they set for themselves: to create environmentally friendly tires with increased mileage and good grip.

With Yokohama tires, the driver can not only enjoy driving, but also influence the environment. Numerous European tests have shown that Yokohama tires Geolandar SUVs have excellent wear resistance. So, in the authoritative German edition of Auto Bild, Yokohama took an honorable third place in this indicator and first place in dry handling.

The best summer tires for the wet

Perhaps most motorists are familiar with the effect of aquaplaning. This is a situation where a thin layer of water forms between the tire and the asphalt, which makes the car completely uncontrollable. An important part of the problem is that drivers often simply do not attach importance to a seemingly innocent puddle. That is why it is necessary to choose rubber, which, among other things, copes well with wet surfaces.

But how do you tell a good rain tire from a bad one? Of course, the most reliable option is independent professional tests and comparisons. But you can do with your own eyes, because such tires have a specific look. Firstly, they must have at least one continuous longitudinal furrow into which water will be discharged. Secondly, a herringbone pattern is preferred, due to which water will be more efficiently removed from the contact patch with the road. Finally, we must not forget that insufficient tread depth has an extremely negative effect on grip.

According to the test results of the authoritative German publication Auto Bild, Uniroyal RainExpert summer tires were recognized as the best in terms of longitudinal and transverse aquaplaning. In terms of confidence in the passage of wet roads, they are confidently ahead of all competitors, including Hankook and Viking tires.

The Uniroyal RainExpert performs best in the rain, showing excellent wet grip. This is achieved thanks to the directional V-shaped tread pattern - grooves that serve to drain water from the contact patch. Special narrow sipes in the tread help to significantly reduce the braking distance of the car. Water is the element of Uniroyal RainExpert summer tires. Among the shortcomings, the owners mention the fact that small stones can clog into the tread, as well as minor balancing problems.

The best silent summer tires

Among motorists there are completely different people. Some people like complete silence, comfort and measured driving, others - the roar of the engine and the squeal of tires, but certainly no one will like the monotonous rumble from rubber. Therefore, manufacturers from all over the world, in addition to providing better traction, are increasingly aiming at reducing noise levels. For this, softer grades of rubber are used, as well as tread blocks of various shapes and sizes, which reduces rumble.

But do not forget that the noise level depends not only on rubber. This is also affected by the quality of the road surface, its properties, the level of tire pressure and many other parameters.

Article about the comparison of R17 summer tires. Tire testing. At the end of the article - an interesting video on how to choose summer tires.

The content of the article:

R17 summer tires are regularly tested by various companies. Many of these tests are considered corrupt by motorists, some are trusted and others are ignored. But in any case, getting acquainted with the information and comparing the data obtained will not be superfluous.

Is testing worth believing?

A couple of years ago, several market-leading brands were seen in a kind of falsification - companies made a limited number of products specifically for testing. Naturally, such tires differed in quality from those that were on sale. No one undertakes to claim that a frank marriage was “leaked” on the shelves, but any statistics (including the R17 summer tire rating) raised doubts about reality.

After this turn of events, companies that conduct autotests in most cases began to buy tires in ordinary stores, and not use those provided by the manufacturer. This approach eliminates at least fraud on the part of the manufacturer.

Types of tires and the results of their testing

The test procedure consists of several steps. Tires are tested for maneuverability in various weather conditions, grip levels, off-road flotation, etc. R17 summer tires were tested by many companies and at various test sites. The results of each test vary, but in general, proven reliable brands, such as Pirelli, Michelin, etc., occupy the leading positions.

Summer tires 225/50 R17

Several popular models proved to be the best in the tests.

Continental Sport Contact 5

Summer tires 215/55 R17

Auto Zeitung magazine conducted a fresh test of 17-inch summer tires, highlighting the most promising options and studying all the features of each sample.

Michelin Primacy 3

In the Auto Zeitung test for 2017, this model showed the best results in almost all indicators: aquaplaning, grip, handling. The only significant drawback is the strong rolling resistance.

Grip with the surface in conditions of high humidity is slightly lower than desired, but on a dry surface it does not cause any complaints; it is close to ideal.

The flaws can also include fuzzy controllability in the process of maneuvering.

Continental ContiPremiumContact 5

These are the best R17 summer tires in terms of quality characteristics after Michelin. Testing revealed excellent handling and lateral stability on dry surfaces. But the braking distance on dry asphalt could be shorter.

Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance

Products distinguished themselves by the smallest braking distance among all the tested items. Tires also have a low level of rolling resistance.

The disadvantages include a slow response to the steering wheel and an insufficient steering angle on dry asphalt.

Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue

This model has one significant drawback - low resistance to hydroplaning.
But the handling and short braking length, both on dry and wet roads, are the strengths of Pirelli.

Summer tires 225/60 R17

The Australian company Choice has carried out autotests for several varieties of tires with size data 225/60 R17. The choice was due to the fact that these tires are the most versatile among a variety of narrowly focused models for SUVs.

According to the results of the tests, the first places were taken (as expected) by popular and proven brands.

Pirelli Cinturato P7

Summer tires R17 225 with symmetrical tread have proven themselves in such disciplines as noise level, braking distance and cornering in wet and dry weather conditions.

Goodyear Efficient Grip SUV

The model took second place, only slightly behind Pirelli.

Summer tires 225/65 R17

The popularity and quality of such brands as "Continetal" or "Pirelli" is beyond doubt, and only the same popular and proven brands can compete with them.

Michelin Latitude Cross

Combine the qualities of SUVs and off-road tires. They have almost perfect grip characteristics and increased wear resistance. Rain, mud, stones - the car overcomes all this thanks to the presence of cutting edges on the tread, made by analogy with the winter version. Noise reduction is facilitated by a special bending of the tread pattern.

Tires have good handling, maneuverability and hydroplaning resistance. The disadvantages include only an increase in the braking distance on a wet road surface.

Yokohama Parada Spec-X

The model has a pronounced tread and a directional pattern. Products are resistant to mechanical damage and temperature extremes. Ideal for powerful SUVs and off-road use as the tread provides optimal grip. The only thing that many motorists complain about is small stones that get stuck in the recesses of the tread pattern.

Kumho Sens KR26

The tire's tread is widened for increased performance, while specially designed thin lamellas reduce noise and provide a smooth ride. The car feels confident both on wet and dry roads, with directional driving and in the process of maneuvering.

Falken Ziex ZE912

These tires finished in third place, showing above average results and leaving brands such as Nexen, Hankook, Maxxis, Yokohama and others behind.

Tires for crossovers

Crossovers are in increasing demand every year, despite the fact that their cost is higher than the level of budget cars. Due to the design features, crossovers are universal and equally good for driving on asphalt and in off-road conditions.

This state of affairs implies the presence of specially designed tires that are suitable for various operating conditions, whether it be asphalt or dirt country roads. Testing tires for crossovers is somewhat different from testing "lite" tires for standard passenger cars. They must have perfect grip, good handling in bad weather and other characteristics.

The German auto magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" regularly tests tires from various manufacturers. Tests of summer tires 2016 R17 for crossovers took place with the participation of 9 types of tire products.

Linglong Greenmax 4x4 HP

BRIDGESTONE POTENZA ADRENALIN RE003

This sports tire is positioned in the Premium/Premium Standard segment. Its development focused on wet braking and handling and dry handling. The characteristic sporty tread design did not go unnoticed by Bridgestone engineers. Compared to its predecessor (we wrote a review of this model a little earlier), the improvement in handling is largely due to the new silica-based base tread layer. The shape of the block with rounded edges contributes to the even distribution of pressure in the contact patch, and the optimized carcass structure has reduced the weight of the tire while maintaining strength. All this provides a more predictable and smooth tire response to steering. As a result of the introduced innovations, the stability of the tire on the turning arc, the resistance to aquaplaning, and the accuracy of control over the car have improved. Wet braking performance has also improved.

DUELER H/P SPORT

The tires of this model are designed specifically for premium SUVs and crossovers and are mainly focused on driving on the highway and in urban conditions. The asymmetric tread pattern (on models over 19 inches) and the high silicon content in the tread layer ensure good wet grip. The tread pattern of the sports model Potenza RE 050 is used as a base, which provides a high level of handling both on dry and wet road surfaces. The optimized tread pattern also makes this tire comfortable and ensures low noise levels. The use of a mold with trim technology allows the sidewall of the tire to remain always black. The Dueler H/P Sport is available in H, T, V, W (W XL) and Y speed ratings and is available in 35-65 profiles and bores from 16" to 20".

BRIDGESTONE DUELER A/T 697

For the Cordiant Sport 3, a number of technologies have been developed that aim to solve common problems on Russian roads, such as safety when driving on wet roads. Improved drainage system with polished grooves ensures effective water drainage from the tire contact patch with the road. Arcuate grooves prevent hydroplaning. The developers of Cordiant also paid attention to maneuverability on any surface: reinforced central ribs reduce reaction time when taxiing, and massive tread blocks increase cornering control. The new tread compound improves cushioning on bumps and imperfections in the road surface. The Cordiant Sport 3 tire line is available in the most popular sizes, including 7 reinforced sizes 16-18″ for crossovers.

FIRESTONE TOURING FS 100

In 1988, Firestone was acquired by the tire brand Bridgestone, but the name of the glorious brand has been preserved. Produced in Thailand and Indonesia, the concept of the Touring FS 100 is defined by the manufacturers themselves as follows: an affordable tire with a high level of safety on dry and wet roads and with a balance of reliability and comfort. Thanks to the rounded edges of the sidewall, the pressure is distributed evenly over the entire area of the tread block, which has a positive effect on both dry and wet handling and braking efficiency. The combination of variable block size and position in the tread pattern helps to evenly distribute noise frequencies, providing sonic comfort. The frame with a reinforced nylon bandage has increased strength, which helps to reduce vibrations. The tire is presented in three standard sizes (next season their number will increase to 22) with a profile height of 60-70 and landing diameters of 13 and 14 inches.

This has been achieved through the use of a number of advanced technologies. Thus, the use of Dynamic Response technology allows you to maintain the stability of the contact patch at ultra-high speeds, BiCompound technology, which involves the use of two different rubber compounds for the inner and outer parts of the tread, provides optimal tire grip on both dry and wet surfaces. And the improved composition of the rubber compound increased wear resistance. The novelty Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is already equipped in the original configuration of such cars as the new generation Porsche Panamera, the new Mercedes AMG E63, Ferrari GTC Lusso. This year, the tire will be introduced to the replacement market in 34 sizes in 19-inch and 20-inch bores. In the future, the size range will be replenished with new sizes.

MICHELIN PILOT SPORT4

Tire for premium and sporty versions of production vehicles. High performance in dry handling was achieved due to the use of an additional layer made of heavy-duty aramid-nylon threads in the construction, which allows the tire to maintain a stable contact patch at high speeds. The stiffer tread structure also stabilizes the contact patch, allowing you to confidently maneuver at high speeds. New generation "functional elastomers", which are part of the rubber compound, are able to "copy" the shape of the roadway, providing optimal grip on wet roads. Deep longitudinal channels effectively remove water from the contact patch, significantly reducing the risk of aquaplaning. Premium Touch technology gives the outer side lettering a premium 'velvet effect'. Also, for each size, there is a disc rim protection that protects the side area from rubbing. This season, the size range of the model has been replenished with ten new sizes. Thus, the number of standard sizes is now 34 with bore diameters from 17 to 19 inches.

This model continues to have exclusive homologation for supercars such as the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS-Coupe Black Series, Ferrari 458 Speciale and Aston Martin Valkyrie. Now the updated Porsche Carrera 911 GT3 and the new generation Audi R8 have also been added to this list. When driving on the race track, the tire has a quick response to the driver's actions, reliable grip and stable performance lap after lap. The latter is due to the composition of the rubber compound, which retains its properties even with strong heating. The tire also exhibits high wet traction in both lateral and longitudinal directions and hydroplaning resistance. The model is available in 33 sizes with mounting diameters from 17 to 21 inches.

MICHELIN CROSSCLIMATE+

This season, Michelin presents an updated version of the CrossClimate tire, which has become the first representative of the new Summer + class. The new tire significantly extends the service life from early spring to late autumn and is designed to provide a high level of safety during the off-season. The main improvements of the novelty concerned the grip properties on the snow surface. The new rubber compound provides an optimal level of grip, including on snowy surfaces. The innovative compound also improves the wear resistance of the tire. The shape of the tire tread has a directional structure with a large number of sectors separated by wide drainage channels. The original shape of each of the sectors, changing the angle of location, allows the edges of the blocks to work effectively both during acceleration and when performing a maneuver on a snowy surface. At the same time, the other side of the block, which has smooth edges, provides a stable contact patch area when driving on a hard road surface. Shoulder sipes have structures that expand towards the base, which, as the tread wears, retains the tire's ability to effectively remove water, and Z-shaped sipes in the central part reduce the deformation of tread blocks, which improves tire handling. The CrossClimate + model will completely replace its predecessor with bore sizes 15 to 18 and will be available in 36 sizes. In addition, this year the tire is available in 13 sizes for crossovers.

NOKIAN HAKKA BLUE 2

The Nokian Hakka tire range is designed for operation in difficult climatic conditions, including on uneven roads. This was taken into account when developing rubber compounds for all Hakka models, including for the new premium class - the Blue 2 model, which went on sale this spring. The sidewall of the ribs on the Hakka Blue 2 tread has golf ball-shaped semi-circular recesses that, by optimizing airflow, cool the tire surface and reduce noise. A special layer of rubber compound on the sidewalls of the tire absorbs impacts and reduces the impact of uneven road surfaces on the car's suspension. The optimized sipe shape removes moisture from the tire-road contact patch by channeling water into the wide main grooves through the center groove of the rib. Lightweight steel belt with increased strength contributes to a high level of controllability when maneuvering and changing lanes. The Hakka Blue 2 is available in sizes ranging from 15" to 17" and includes models with V and W speed ratings.

NOKIAN HAKKA BLACK SUV

This sports tire is the result of almost four years of development. The tread design is based on an asymmetric pattern, which has a beneficial effect on steering precision both on high-speed highways and on rough roads. Rigid shoulder zones are connected by large tread blocks, which, in turn, are connected by longitudinal ribs. Thus, the tread blocks are less prone to deformation, which improves cornering handling. Shoulder areas with asymmetrical chamfered groove angles help make handling more predictable and logical. A number of innovations have also been used to improve the tire's hydroplaning resistance. These are feather grooves passing through the ribs in the central zone, and expanded grooves in the shoulder areas, and wide polished main grooves. A rubber compound that performs well over a wide temperature range is optimized for heavy use and high speeds. In addition, aramid fibers have been added to the sidewall rubber compound to make the tire resistant to wear and cuts. The tire range includes 26 sizes with landing diameters from 17 to 22 inches with speed indices V and W.

NOKIAN ROCKPROOF

This model is a new product of the Nokian Tires concern and is designed for off-road driving enthusiasts. The new, cut-resistant hybrid rubber compound and aggressive tread pattern provide high tire stability even in difficult off-road conditions. Optimized tread block support provides tread stiffness, which has a positive effect on stability and handling. Special "stone removers" prevent sharp and uneven stones from getting stuck in the tread. Aramid fiber sidewall technology provides a new type of durability and protection in challenging road conditions. The tire is available in eight sizes from LT 225/75 R16 to LT 315/70 R17.

NOKIAN NORDMAN SX2

This is another novelty of the season by the Nokian Tires concern, the sale of which began this spring. Among the main innovations of the model are specially shaped channels located between the shoulder blocks, which accelerate the removal of water from the tire contact patch with the road. The new eco-compound with silica particles provides strong wet grip and low rolling resistance at all temperatures. Adding pine oil to the rubber compound increases the wear resistance of the tire. The design of the tire also uses a solution that has already become traditional for the Hakka line - hemispherical cavities in the walls of the ribs of the tread, resembling depressions on the surface of a golf ball. The innovation reduces the outside noise of the tire while driving. The range of tire sizes ranges from 13 to 16 inches and includes products with T and H speed ratings.

PIRELLI P ZERO

The Italian company introduced this tire last spring. According to the developers themselves, a feature of the new tire is maximum stability even at the highest speeds. The technology, the essence of which is the use of a particularly hard rubber compound in the bead area, has emerged from the experience in the development and production of tires for Formula 1 racing. This solution provides the fastest and most accurate response to steering movements without loss of grip in the transverse direction. The use of another special technology made it possible to flatten the contact patch, which contributes to more even wear and increased tire durability. The increased number of tread grooves, as well as the deepening and widening of the channels, made it possible to increase the volume of water removed from the contact patch by 10%, which increased the tire's resistance to hydroplaning. The special tread pattern has also reduced the noise level emitted by the tire. A number of new solutions used in the development and production of new items made it possible to reduce rolling resistance by 15%, which significantly affects fuel efficiency. Today, under the same name P Zero, three technically different tire options are produced, and each of these options is designed for a specific type of car. For cars with more pronounced sporty characteristics, an option with a less embossed tread (A) is provided, the second option (B) is more suitable for sedans. The third tread pattern (C) is similar to a racing slick and was developed specifically for the new P Zero Corsa.
