To know the inaccessible to knowledge by seeking, “Lord, show us the Father,” said Philip. You told him: “Having been with Me for so long, have you not known that the Father is in Me and I am in the Father?” Therefore, O Incomprehensible One, I cry out to Thee with fear:

Jesus, eternal God; Jesus, the mighty King.

Jesus, Lord longsuffering; Jesus, merciful Savior.

Jesus, my most gracious Guardian; Jesus, cleanse my sins.

Jesus, blot out my iniquities; Jesus, let go of my iniquities.

Jesus, Son of the living God; Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Jesus, hear me, conceived in iniquities; Jesus, cleanse me, born in the sins.

Jesus, Creator of the heavenly Forces; Jesus, earthly Redeemer.

Jesus, Hell Destroyer; Jesus, Organizer of all creation.

Jesus, Comforter of my soul; Jesus, enlightener of my mind.

Just as you once redeemed us from the curse of the law, Jesus, with the shed divine blood, so now free us from the net in which the serpent has entangled us with carnal passions, and prodigal temptation and pernicious despondency, proclaiming to You: Hallelujah!

Ikos 5.

The Jewish children, seeing in the form of a human who created man with His own hand, and understanding the Lord in Him, hastened to greet Him with branches, “Hosanna!” proclaiming. We bring you a song, saying:

Ikos 7.

An unprecedented action was shown by the Creator, who appeared to us: He was incarnated without a seed from the Virgin, from the tomb, without breaking the seal, resurrected, and entered the flesh to the Apostles, with the doors locked. Therefore, in amazement, let us sing:

Jesus, Lord of those in power; Jesus, Judge of the living and the dead.

Ikos 10.

Eternal King, Comforter, true Christ, cleanse us from all filthiness, as you cleansed ten lepers, and heal us, as you healed the money-loving soul of Zacchaeus the publican, so that we proclaim to You, crying out in tenderness:

Jesus, incorruptible treasure; Jesus, wealth is inexhaustible.

Jesus, strengthening food; Jesus, inexhaustible drink.

Jesus, the poor's robe; Jesus, widows intercession.

Jesus, protector of orphans; Jesus, help to the working people.

Jesus, wanderers guide; Jesus, floating helmsmen.

Jesus, a quiet haven for those who endure the storm; Jesus God, raise me up, the fallen one.

Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 11.

Singing with complete contrition, I offer You, unworthy, I cry out to You, like a Canaanite: “Jesus have mercy on me!” For I do not have a daughter, but flesh, heavily possessed by passions and kindled with anger, and give healing to those who cry out to You: Hallelujah!

Ikos 11.

You, the Lamp, giving light to those who are in the darkness of ignorance, who previously persecuted Paul, but heeded the power of the voice of Divine Wisdom and quickly saw the light of his soul. So enlighten the darkened eyes and my soul, exclaiming:

Jesus, my mighty King; Jesus, my God Almighty.

Jesus, my Lord is immortal; Jesus, my glorious Creator.

Jesus, my good guide; Jesus, my most generous Shepherd.

Jesus, my merciful Master; Jesus, my most merciful Savior.

Jesus, enlighten my feelings darkened by passions; Jesus, heal my body covered with the sores of sins.

Jesus, cleanse my mind from vain thoughts; Jesus, keep my heart from evil desires.

Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 12.

Grant me the grace of forgiveness, O Jesus who forgives all debts, and accept me, the penitent, as You received Peter, who denied You, and call me, careless, as once Paul, who persecuted You, and hear me crying out to You: Alleluia!

Ikos 12.

Singing Your incarnation, we all praise You and believe with Thomas that You are the Lord and God, sitting with the Father and coming to judge the living and the dead. Then make me worthy to stand at Your right, crying out:

Jesus, eternal King, have mercy on me; Jesus, fragrant flower, fill me with fragrances.

Jesus, beloved Warmth, warm me; Jesus, Temple eternal, cover me.

Jesus, bright clothes, adorn me; Jesus, Pearl of great value, shine on me.

Jesus, dear Stone, enlighten me; Jesus, Sun of Righteousness, illuminate me.

Jesus, Holy Light, shine on me; Jesus, deliver me from mental and physical illnesses.

Jesus, take me out of the hand of the enemy; Jesus, free me from unquenchable fire and other eternal torments.

Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 13.

O sweet and all-merciful Jesus! Now accept this small prayer of ours, as You accepted the two mites of a widow, and save Your inheritance from enemies visible and invisible, from the invasion of foreigners, from sickness and hunger, from all sorrow and deadly ulcers, and from the coming torment deliver all who proclaim to You: Hallelujah!

Ikos 1.

Creator of angels and Lord of heavenly Forces! Open my feeble mind and untie your tongue to the praise of Your most pure name, as You once opened the ear to the deaf and tongue-tied and loosened the tongue, and he spoke, thus exclaiming:

Wonderful Jesus, Angels' surprise; Mighty Jesus, deliverance of the forefathers.

Sweet Jesus, glorification of the patriarchs; Glorious Jesus, strength of kings.

Beloved Jesus, the fulfillment of the prophets; O martyr Jesus, fortress of the martyrs.

Quiet Jesus, joy of the monks; Merciful Jesus, delight of the presbyters.

Most merciful Jesus, fasting abstinence; Sweet Jesus, reverend rejoicing.

Jesus, most honorable, virginal chastity; Eternal Jesus, salvation of sinners.

Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 1.

The Governor who defends me and the Lord, the winner of hell! Having got rid of eternal death, I dedicate songs of praise to You, I, Your creation and servant. You, as having unspeakable mercy, free me from all misfortunes, crying out:

"Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me!"

Prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ

Vladyka Lord Jesus Christ, our God, according to Your inexpressible love of mankind, at the end of the ages, clothed in the flesh of the Ever-Virgin Mary! We praise Your saving providence for us, we, Your servants, Lord; we sing to Thee, for through Thee we have known the Father; we bless you, through whom the Holy Spirit also came into the world. We worship Your Most Pure Mother in the flesh, who served this terrible sacrament. We praise Your angelic choirs as singers and servants of Your majesty. Blessed we call Forerunner John, who baptized Thee, O Lord. We also honor the prophets who foretold You. We glorify Your holy Apostles, we exalt the martyrs, we glorify Your saints, we worship Your saints, and we honor all Your righteous. Such and such a great and innumerable assembly of the Divine, we induce to prayer to You, the all-merciful God, we, Your servants, and therefore we ask forgiveness of our sins. Grant him to us for the sake of all Thy Saints, or rather, for the sake of Thy holy bounties, for You are blessed forever. Amen.

Introductory speech by Archpriest Artemy Vladimirov about the Akathist to Jesus the Sweetest.

(Transcribed with minimal editing of spoken language)

Greetings, dear friends! We continue our conversations, our spiritual reflections. And if you remember, quite recently we completed a great work, meditating on the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos. From transmission to transmission, we took one petition each, which begins with the word "Rejoice" and reflected on spiritual life, earthly life, the path of salvation, inscribed for us by God's finger, under the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But, alas, as all good things must end sometime, so we have exhausted the entire volume of the Akathist. However, no less joy awaits us ahead: we are approaching another Great Akathist, dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In essence, these two Akathists: the Theotokos and the Akathist to the Savior became, as you probably know, the fundamental basis for all the many other works of this genre dedicated to one or another icon of the Theotokos or the saint of God. But all these akathists, written in subsequent centuries, up to the 20th and 21st centuries, are guided by and ascend to one of the two Great akathists: the Savior or the Mother of God.

It is remarkable that church writers were in no hurry to leave their autographs, just like icon painters, when creating masterpieces glorifying the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, did not put signatures on the margins of icons. And until now, scientists, historians, those who study ancient liturgical literature, have not come to a consensus on who owns the Akathist, written in honor of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is an opinion that this is the hand of Hesychius, the presbyter of Jerusalem, a remarkable ascetic writer of the early Middle Ages, who left us his reflections on the importance of the Jesus Prayer and on how the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, called upon with attention, has a gracious and beneficial effect on the inner world of a Christian: it enlightens his mind, pacifies the heart, delivers from passions and bad habits, impresses in the soul the perfection of Christ, or the virtues of humility, meekness, peace, purity, courage, joy, prudence and love.

However, not everyone is convinced that the authorship of this marvelous artistic features, the depth of meaning, the expressiveness of the language, the accuracy of the images of the work belongs precisely to Saint Hesychius. One thing is clear: the person who meditated on the name of God, Christ the Redeemer, calling Him either a pearl, or a precious stone, or lightning, or the Good Shepherd, a door, Bread, Light, was perfectly familiar with the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament. The mind of the author of Akathist was literally dissolved in the language of the epistles of the Apostle Paul or the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. But not only that, before us is not just a scribe who has been researching spiritual literature all his life, comparing and comparing with the help of memory, using the ability to rationally weigh the material, what is revealed to his gaze, before us is a genuine ascetic, an ascetic of piety, a person in whom the grace of the Holy Spirit lives and manifests itself without forcing thinking, and the Holy Spirit triples the will of Christ's disciple and multiplies his creative abilities.

It is impossible not to admit that the Akathist to the Lord Jesus Christ is a work anointed with the grace of the Holy Spirit, a work written by an inspired hymnographer. The author of this Akathist can, without any doubt, be called the greatest poet, given that the Greek meaning of the word "poetry" is translated as "action", and in fact the Holy Spirit worked in the heart of the author of the Akathist. The words composed by him and dedicated to God affect the minds and hearts of the listeners. A person, depressed by deep sadness, will approach this Akathist, perhaps bound hand and foot by the spirit of despondency, will force himself to read the kontakion and ikos, the first, second, third, and if his attention does not slip over the text, if he does not mechanically repeat these words, but will bring them to the mind and heart, believe me (and this has been verified by the experience of millions of Orthodox Christians), a spark of cheerfulness, joy, vitality suddenly ignites in the heart, and the Holy Spirit, according to the law of communicating vessels, overflows from the Akathist or from the heart of a holy ascetic , who wrote it, into the heart cup of a weak, weak, despondent modern reader. And he suddenly notices with surprise that it has become lighter in his soul, warmer in his heart, he feels an urge to continue reading, no longer forcing himself, but willingly, with joy, not a burden, but a joy. And this is undeniable evidence that a person performs akathist readings not only with his own strength, but also with the help of the invisibly present Guardian Angel. How beautifully St. Seraphim of Sarov speaks about this in his notes: “At the hour when every word of the prayer you say falls on your heart and you feel that this word breaks like an arrow from a bowstring and goes into the spiritual world, falling to the Throne of God, when , reading prayers, you suddenly begin to understand and realize that the Heavenly Father Himself looks at you from the height of His glory, sees and hears all your attempts and accepts your petitions and needs, at such an hour know that the Angel of God is praying with you.

The Akathist to the Savior, as we find out, has some miraculous, miraculous property to influence the inner, moral world of a person and enlighten him with the grace of the Holy Spirit. That is why it is a pity, a pity for those people who sometimes even confess to priests: “And what is it, father, we read the same prayers all our lives: in the morning - morning, in the evening - evening? Here are the Akathists to the Mother of God, the Savior - doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo, like peas against the wall. It is sad, friends, to listen to these words, because God does not need the volume of the pages of the prayer book we have read, but an attentive, thoughtful, reasonable, I would say, trembling and reverent standing before Himself. And since our thoughts scatter, the heart, like the surface of the sea, is worried, we start praying, covered, like flies, with some dreams, memories, we fail to establish a golden thread of communication with the Creator - thoughts get confused, words get stuck in larynx. That is why, having taken the Akathist to the Savior, written by a holy man, whose heart became the reed of a scribe-scribe, in whose heart the Lord God Himself rested invisibly, we, as soon as we read the first kontakion and ikos, feel a blessed change within ourselves. Only by following every word with the mind, bringing what is read to the mind and heart, we seem to acquire wings, with the help of which it is given to us to ascend from earth to heaven. A kind of fertile bridge is being built before us by itself, connecting time and eternity.

And next time, dear friends, having opened the prayer book, we will begin to study this Akathist, which will show and prove to us that the Lord Jesus Christ is both the Creator, the Savior, and the Judge of all people. He is the true God and the true Man, He is the dearest and closest being to us, it is no coincidence that His name is Love. And looking at Christ, Who spreads His arms from the Cross, taking the Akathist in our hands, we will turn to Him as little children, and God will hear us and accept our prayer and give us incomparably more than we ask Him.

Akathist to the Sweetest Jesus: what is it

Lord Jesus Christ

Akathist for many centuries has been a favorite prayer for a large number believers. The reason for such popularity, first of all, is that it is not so much a work of literary literature as a work of the writer's spirit.

Two akathists remain the standards of this genre of chants: to the Most Holy Theotokos and to Jesus the Sweetest. Through these so beautifully composed hymns, the whole earthly life of the Lord and His Mother shines.

When and by whom (presumably) the text was written

The very first akathist was compiled by a Byzantine author in honor of Holy Mother of God, around the fifth century. This unique church chant, reminiscent of a hymn in structure and form, for a long time remained the only work of its kind.

Useful materials

Only eight centuries later, in the thirteenth century, the world saw another similar work dedicated to the Savior (this article is devoted to this creation).

Most likely, the last work was written by a theologian who was well acquainted with the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament. Of course, the fact that the author was a great prayer book, and his mind at the time of writing was completely dissolved in the texts of the Gospel and in the epistles of the holy apostles.

And, of course, the writer was a poet endowed with great talent, and his creative abilities were multiplied many times by the Holy Spirit, whose grace is felt in every line.

Translation into Slavic

The translation into Slavic dates from the fourteenth century.

What is this piece about?

Lord Jesus Christ

The narrative part includes the main stages of the earthly path of the Savior. Plots from the Gospel are combined with prayers in a poetic form. The text consists of ikos and kontakia. The kontakion reflects the very essence, and the ikos also contains solemn and laudatory petitions. The work shows and proves that Jesus Christ is the true God and Man, and his name is Love. Out of love for people He came to earth, out of love He worked miracles that are innumerable, out of love for people He voluntarily went to suffering. Only small grains from His earthly life and miracles entered the akathist, but they reflect the essence like stars:

  • ikos 2 tells how Jesus “opened his hearing and tongue to the deaf and rotten one”;
  • kontakion 2 - how he resurrected the son of a weeping widow: “and resurrect my soul mortified by sins” - we ask;
  • ikos 2 - to Philip, to a request to show the Father, he answered: “how did you not know that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father?”;
  • Ikos 3 recalled how He called publicans, sinners and infidels to Himself;
  • kontakion 4 covered the event when the drowning Peter received a helping hand and salvation;
  • in ikos 4, the blind man exclaims with a loud voice: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” - and the Lord opens his eyes;
  • reading Ikos 5, we see how Jewish children meet and glorify the Lord in human form, His path is covered with palm branches, and glorify, exclaiming: “hosanna”, and in this interjection one can hear both joy, and faith and prayer;
  • kontakion 7 - resignedly, like an innocent lamb (lamb) follows to death, and then, like God, rises and ascends to Heaven with glory;
  • ikos 7 - after his resurrection in the flesh, he appeared to the apostles, and locked doors are not an obstacle for him;
  • ikos 10 recalls how the Savior cleansed ten lepers and healed the money-loving tax collector Zacchaeus;
  • in ikos 11 - Paul, who had persecuted him before, brought to reason, and inspired him with the right thought;
  • kontakion 12 - The Savior accepted Peter's repentance, forgave the betrayer;
  • kontakion 13 sings about how he accepted and highly appreciated the small sacrifice of a widow who gave all her livelihood.

When they resort to reading it

Lord Jesus Christ

The holy fathers of ancient times blessed the laity with the reading of the akathist, not unreasonably believing that such work would be accepted by the Lord as a small feat. A rational explanation can also be found for their opinion: an ordinary prayer is very short in scope, and takes only 2-3 minutes, during which time it is difficult to shake off worldly fuss and it is hardly possible to tune in to live communication with the Creator by the end of the reading.

The Akathist is a more voluminous work, and in 20-30 minutes of reading, the worshiper will feel the Lord gently knocking on his heart:

“Behold, I stand at the door, and I understand; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and I will dine with him, and the other with Me.” Rev. 3:20.

Many years of experience in prayer practice proves that an attentively reading akathist (provided that he will delve into every word, try to bring it to the mind and heart, and not, as usual, just glide over it with his eyes), then it is necessary:

  • get rid of despondency and deep sadness;
  • come out of a depressed state;
  • find a way out of a difficult situation;
  • gain vivacity of mind;
  • will gain vitality and be able to withstand circumstances;
  • his heart will receive a spark of faith and hope;
  • the soul will be warmed by warmth and love.

How does reading an akathist help?

The miraculous image of the Lord Jesus Christ

The words of akathist prayers have a miraculous effect, filling with life-giving energy a dull, sad, weak reader prone to passions. This energy was generously shared with the descendants by the author of the creation, which, undoubtedly, was controlled by the Holy Spirit. It is necessary to delve into the meaning of the phrases, and then reading will become a great joy, and not a duty. Don't believe? And you try!

Just do not forget the main thing: give Christ your heart and mind without a trace, at least for the time of reading, and ideally for the rest of your life. And in return, He will give us incomparably more: a rich, vibrant, interesting, joyful, beautiful and fruitful life.

Instead of a verbose afterword, there are only 6 words from the akathist:

"Jesus, source of understanding, give me a drink when I'm thirsty."

Savior in a white coat

All angelic nature ceaselessly glorifies Thy most holy name, Jesus, in heaven: Holy, Holy, Holy, crying out; but we, sinning on earth with mortal lips, cry out: Alleluia.

Ikos 9
The branches are multi-talented, like silent fish we see about You, Jesus, our Savior: they are perplexed to say, how immutable God and a perfect man are you? We, marveling at the mystery, cry out faithfully: Jesus, eternal God; Jesus, King of kings. Jesus, Lord of those who own; Jesus, Judge of the living and the dead. Jesus, hope of the unreliable; Jesus, comfort to those who weep. Jesus, glory to the poor; Jesus, do not judge me according to my deeds. Jesus, cleanse me according to Your mercy; Jesus, take away my despondency. Jesus, enlighten my thoughts of the heart; Jesus, give me the memory of death. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 10
To save the world though, East to East, to the dark West - having come to our nature, humbled yourself to death; the same exalted thy name above every name, and from all the tribes of heaven and earth hear: Alleluia.

Ikos 10
The Eternal King, the Comforter, the true Christ, cleanse us from all filth, as if you cleansed ten lepers, and healed us, as if you healed the money-loving soul of Zacchae the publican, let us cry out to Thee, in tenderness calling: Jesus, incorruptible treasure; Jesus, wealth is inexhaustible. Jesus, strong food; Jesus, inexhaustible drink. Jesus, the poor's robe; Jesus, intercession of widows. Jesus, protector of orphans; Jesus, helping laborers. Jesus, strange mentor; Jesus, floating helmsmen. Jesus, stormy calms; Jesus God, raise up the fallen one. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 11
I bring all-pitying singing to Thee unworthy, crying out to Thee like a Canaanite: Jesus, have mercy on me; not a daughter, but the flesh of the imam with passions, raging and burning with rage, and give healing to the crying Ty: Alleluia.

Ikos 11
A light-giving lamp to those who exist in the darkness of unreason, first chase Thee Paul, inspire the power of God-reasoning voice and understand spiritual speed; Enlighten the dark apples of my soul and my eyes, calling: Jesus, my mighty King; Jesus, my mighty God. Jesus, my Lord, immortal; Jesus, my glorious Creator. Jesus, my good teacher; Jesus, my most generous Shepherd. Jesus, my Lord, merciful; Jesus, my most merciful Savior. Jesus, enlighten my feelings darkened by passions; Jesus, heal my body, aggravated by sins. Jesus, cleanse my mind from vain thoughts; Jesus, keep my heart from the lusts of the evil ones. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 12
Grant grace to me, solver of all debts, Jesus, and accept me repentant, as thou hast accepted Peter, who rejected Thee, and call me downcast, as of old Paul, persecuting Thee, and hear me crying out to Thee: Alleluia.

Ikos 12
Singing Your incarnation, we all praise Thee, and we believe with Thomas, as the Lord and God are, sit with the Father and want to judge the living and the dead. Then vouchsafe me to stand on the right hand, crying out: Jesus, eternal King, have mercy on me; Jesus, fragrant flower, make me fragrant. Jesus, beloved warmth, warm me; Jesus, eternal temple, cover me. Jesus, bright garment, adorn me; Jesus, honest pearl, shine on me. Jesus, precious stone, enlighten me; Jesus, sun of righteousness, illuminate me. Jesus, holy light, cover me; Jesus, deliver me from mental and physical illnesses. Jesus, take me out of the hand of opposition; Jesus, unquenchable fire and other eternal torments, free me. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 13
Oh sweet and merciful Jesus! Now accept this little prayer of ours, as if you took two widows of the widow, and save Your property from the enemy visible and invisible, from the invasion of foreigners, from illness and famine, from all sorrow and deadly wounds, and the coming torment of all crying out to Ty: Alleluia , alleluia, alleluia.

Ikos 1
Creator of angels and Lord of hosts, open my bewildered mind and tongue to the praise of Your most pure name, as if deaf and roaring of old, you opened your hearing and tongue, and, saying such a call: Wonderful Jesus, wonder of angels; Mighty Jesus, deliverance of the forefathers. Sweet Jesus, glorification of the patriarchs; Glorious Jesus, strength of kings. Beloved Jesus, the fulfillment of the prophets; O martyr Jesus, strength of the martyrs. Quiet Jesus, joy of the monks; Merciful Jesus, sweet presbyters. Most merciful Jesus, fasting abstinence; Sweet Jesus, rejoicing of the monks. Jesus, most honorable, virginal chastity; Eternal Jesus, salvation of sinners. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Kondak 1
Chosen Voevodo and Lord, hell to the winner, as if you were to get rid of eternal death, I will laudably describe Thee, Thy creation and servant; but, as if you have unspeakable mercy, free me from all troubles, calling: Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Prayer
Master Lord Jesus Christ my God, even for the sake of Thy philanthropy, at the end of the ages in the flesh, wrap yourself in the flesh of the Ever-Virgin Mary, I glorify Thy saving providence for me, Thy servant, Vladyka; I will hymn Thee, for I have known Thee for the sake of the Father; I will bless Thee, for His sake, and the Holy Spirit will come into the world; I bow down to Your fleshly Most Pure Mother, who served such a terrible mystery; I praise Your angelic standing, like singers and servants of Your majesty; I bless John the Forerunner, who baptized Thee, O Lord; I honor the prophets who proclaimed You, I glorify Your holy apostles; I also celebrate the martyrs, but I praise Thy priests; I bow down to Your saints, and I nurse all Your righteous. Such and such a many and indescribable face of the Divine I bring to prayer to You, the all-merciful God, Your servant, and for this reason I ask forgiveness for my sins, if you grant me all of Yours for the sake of the saints, rather than Your saints bounty, as if you are blessed forever. Amen

Amen
