Vyacheslav in Orthodoxy. Holy noble prince Vyacheslav Czech. John Troparion to the Blessed Prince Vyacheslav of Czech

Saints of different ages are prototypes of the heroes of many literary works. Sometimes we don't even remember the author of our favorite lines - but we know exactly who inspired their creator.

Hello! Writer Olga Klyukina is with you with the program “Types: Saints in Literature”.

Today we are talking about the noble Prince Vyacheslav of Czech and the popular Christmas song in Europe "Good Vyacheslav King ..."

"Good Vyacheslav king
Opening the shutters
I saw deep snow
On the glorious Stefan's day

Sees - in a field under the moon
The blizzard blows snow
There's a peasant in the wind
Collects brushwood.

“Where are you, my faithful servant?
Tell me friend
Where does the peasant live?
Freezing in this cold "...

So - attentive to people, courteous, kind - remained in the people's memory the image of the right-believing Prince Vyacheslav (or Vaclav) of Czech.

Vyacheslav lived in the 10th century and was the eldest son of the Czech prince Vratislav. He had a younger brother Boleslav and several sisters.

It so happened that Vyacheslav was brought up from childhood in the house of his grandmother, the holy princess Ludmila of Czech, and adopted all the best from her.

After the death of her husband, Princess Ludmila herself ruled the Czech Republic until her sons came of age. In chronicles (by the way, she is the first woman mentioned in Czech chronicles), her reign is characterized as reasonable and fair.

Princess Lyudmila was a Christian and knew the Slavonic alphabet. According to legend, Saint Methodius, the Enlightener of the Slavs himself, baptized her.

Her beloved grandson Vyacheslav was also well educated: he knew Latin and Greek. His soul also received a Christian "education": kind, compassionate towards people.

Not every ruler, looking out the window, will pay attention to a chilled peasant gathering firewood...

"Sire, three miles from here
There's a spring under the mountain
At Saint Agnes"

"Get some wine,
meat, pine wood
Let the poor man taste
Palace meals "...

But if Vyacheslav inherited a lot from his wise, enlightened grandmother, then his younger brother Boleslav was under the influence of his mother, the cruel pagan Dragomira.

The daughter-in-law hated Lyudmila, jealous of her respect among the people, and after the death of her husband, Prince Vratislav, she sent murderers to the princess-martyr.

Vyacheslav was sixteen years old when he immediately lost his father, grandmother, and mother too - for her atrocities, Dragomira was expelled from the country.

Of the relatives of the young Vyacheslav, who had taken the princely throne, now there was only his brother Boleslav. Prince Vyacheslav fairly disposed of the inheritance, ceding to his younger brother a vast area of the principality, which was called Boleslavia.

Among the numerous legends about Vyacheslav Czech, one is especially touching. It is about how a young prince with his faithful servant Podivoj went to church in winter for matins. Vyacheslav walked through the snowdrifts in front and carefully trodden a path in the snow for the old man, saying: “Today is winter, old man, follow my footsteps, which I laid in the snow.”

"Evil winter in defiance
With winds, snows
The king and the page went out
With a load on your back

“Good Sir, you can’t see the zgi,
Sweeps eyes
Heart sank from longing
And there is no urine to go"

“See, here are my footprints
Step into them boldly
So you will avoid the cold
And warm up your body.

So he went for the treasure
Be bolder in the footsteps -
The very turf warmed the saint
I'll do my own..."

Holy Prince Vyacheslav of Czech - Prince-Passion-Bearer, Prince-Martyr...

Once, on the feast of Cosmas and Damian, Prince Vyacheslav went to Boleslavl, the city of his younger brother. After the liturgy, he was going to go home, but Boleslav began to beg his brother to stay for a festive dinner.

Many friends of Boleslav gathered for the evening feast in the princely palace, and during the knightly fun, someone whispered to Prince Vyacheslav that this was no accident, the younger brother planned to kill him. But Vyacheslav did not want to believe it and stayed with his brother until the morning.

At dawn, when Prince Vyacheslav was already leaving the gates of the house, Boleslav unexpectedly overtook him.

- Good evening was with you, my brother! - Vyacheslav told him.

Drawing his sword, Boleslav replied:

- I want to make the current one better than yesterday, - and hit Vyacheslav on the head.

They grappled, at some point Prince Vyacheslav snatched the sword from Boleslav's hands...

There were also legends about the strength of Vyacheslav and his ability to wield weapons. Somehow, the young prince of the Czechs had to fight with the neighboring prince Radislav, and when the two troops were already standing opposite each other, Vyacheslav invited the enemy to resolve the dispute by a duel. Radislav was defeated and asked Vyacheslav for forgiveness...

Now the Christian prince did not want to shed the blood of his own brother and lowered his sword.

The brothers looked into each other's eyes - and in the meantime, Boleslav's friends and servants were already running into the courtyard, one of them wounded the guest in the arm. Vyacheslav broke free and ran towards the church. The murderers overtook the prince-martyr right on the threshold of the temple ...

Bolesław later repented of his crime. Having become the supreme prince, he ordered that the relics of Prince Vyacheslav be transferred to the Prague Castle, where they still lie in the Cathedral of St. Vitus.

And the memory of the right-believing Prince Vyacheslav is immortalized in a song that adults and children in Europe love to sing on the feast of the Nativity of Christ.

Brothers, believe - they will not save
Money or dominance
And who will please the poor -
He will find bliss!

Blessed Prince Vyacheslav Czech

Days of Remembrance:

Blessed Vyacheslav (aka Vincheslav or Vatslav), Prince of Czech, was the grandson of the holy princess Ludmila, who raised him in the Christian faith. Having received an excellent education from Presbyter Paul, a disciple of Saint Methodius, Saint Vyacheslav spoke Slavonic, Latin, and Greek and was fully educated. His father, Prince Rostislav (Vratislav), died in 920 in a battle with the Ugrians (Hungarians), and 18-year-old Vyacheslav ascended the princely throne.

He ruled wisely and fairly, caring for the Christian enlightenment of his people. Ransoming the children of pagans sold into slavery, he gave them to be raised in a Christian spirit. Prince Vyacheslav was peaceful, revered the clergy, decorated churches. He worked hard to strengthen Christianity in the Czech Republic. He transferred the relics of the martyr Vitus to the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, built for them a magnificent church in the name of St. Vitus.

Magnification to the right-believing Prince Vyacheslav of Czech

We magnify you, noble prince Vyacheslav, and honor your holy memory, for you pray for us Christ our God.

Oh, holy noble prince martyr Vyacheslav, elected governor of the Czech land and all Slovenian Christians, a warm intercessor before God! Today, in memory of your unanimous congregation in this honest temple and before your icon, tenderly praying, we cry out to you from the depths of our hearts: you were a zealot and defender of the Orthodox faith in your life - and we are unshakable in it with your warm prayers to God . You diligently passed the great service entrusted to you, and with your help to stay every time, in it you are called to eat, instruct. You drove away the adversaries of the regiment from your fatherland with the strength of the military and the wisdom of the ruler, and overthrow all enemies visible and invisible against us. You, within the limits of your country, have been trying to plant truth and peace and mercy, and ask us for success from the merciful God in these virtues. You shed your innocent blood, like Abel, from the hand of your brother before the gates of the church, and teach us, as children of the Mother Church, brotherly love and meekness. Oh, great and glorious Prince Vyacheslav, for the sake of the greater glory of Heaven, the crown of the earthly reign was left and righteously crowned with a crown of martyrdom! Now, with a wise mentor, your foremother Lyudmila, and all the saints at the Throne of God, coming, do not forget us orphans and the poor, as if you left no one in your stomach from those. And through your intercession, a quiet and sinless life, and to the eternal kingdom arrange for us to glorify God, wondrous in His saints, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

Although you establish the Orthodox faith in the Czech lands in purity, holy of God, you came out with an army against the pagan prince Kurimsky, in the desire to take possession of the country of Bohemia, rebuke him and openly challenge the attacked prince to a duel. We, seeing the courage of your faith, gratefully cry out to God with tears: Alleluia.

Leading thee the chosen one of God, our holy father Vyacheslav, silently stood the army devoted to you, expect the judgment of the Lord, and suddenly the pagan prince saw the bright cross before your face; falling down on your face, find your benevolent forgiveness. Rejoice, bring all those who are thirsty to the source of purification.

Rejoice, opening the warming grace to your servant with the Spawn;

Rejoice, holy martyr Vyacheslav, prince of the Czech countries.

All angelic nature was amazed at the Providence of Thy mercy, our God, as if You had given us a lot of wise and warm intercessor and for the salvation of our souls before Thy Throne, Lord, guardian. Whoever considers, holy of God, all your labors, even if you did, sing to the Lord: Alleluia.

Thou hast given all to thyself to the Lord, affirm the peace of Christ among men, and conquer the intrigues of Satan with the love of Christ. We, your pious life in vain, cry with love to you:

Rejoice, acquiring gift of clairvoyance;

You were a mentor to all those who came to you with faith, holy of God, the country of the Czech shield and fence, and glorious care of the purity of the Orthodox faith. We, however, call upon the spiritual uprising of the God-protected Slavic countries promised by the saints in prayers and cry out in repentance:

Rejoice, thou who didst accept the cross of suffering on the shoulder for the affirmation of Orthodoxy;

Rejoice, acquiring tenderness of the heart.

Rejoice, choosing the Lord as your avenger;

Rejoice, image of publican humility.

Rejoice, meek face of heavenly insight;

Rejoice, ye pilgrims and beggars.

Rejoice, knowing the goodness of Christ's love;

Rejoice, holy martyr Vyacheslav, prince of the Czech countries.

Singing fragrant unceasingly to the Holy Trinity and the Virgin Mother of God, exalting, with all your thoughts, your life, the image of piety in your country, you have been; Like brother princes Boris and Gleb in Holy Rus', you accepted betrayal from brother Boleslav. But we, having loved God for such mercy, will call out to Him: Alleluia.

God-chosen warrior of Christ, the holy martyr Prince Vyacheslav, as a luminous luminary, you shone forth, exude meekness and humility, affirm the meaning of life and death of Christians, love the path of salvation, call the path of bearing the cross for the salvation of the soul. Let's eat the same:

Rejoice, until now you are building the holy temples of God;

Rejoice, with love you gather the priesthood in them.

Rejoice, dedicating your last temple to the holy forefather Abraham;

Rejoice, inviting your brother with reverence to consecration.

Rejoice, glorious creator of Christian souls;

Rejoice, acquiring the love of the people of God.

Rejoice, warrior of Christ, revealed in imitation;

Rejoice, child-loving father, glorified by God as a consolation to us.

Rejoice, holy martyr Vyacheslav, prince of the Czech countries.

Leading the love of the Most Pure Theotokos to you, holy holiness of God, on the feast of the holy Unmercenaries to brother Boleslav, you were, like a sheep, led to the slaughter, you saw death and you wished to shed your blood for Christ God, anticipating this with words: Tomorrow at the morning vigil of the primate of paradise I will drink the cup of St. Michael, Master, for you already promised the Archangel my soul to the Master; but you, joyfully drinking wine with me now, know that from this hour I will no longer drink it with you. For this reason we cry out to God: Alleluia.

Church of God, affirm the earthly glory of heaven, singing your sufferings, like the Christ-seller Judas, your brother Boleslav carried you away to the feast of the wicked crowd of traitors, the generous holy martyr Vyacheslav, in the morning at the gates of the princely house, death from the sword of his brother and his slander with meekness took you and on on the threshold of the church you gave up your soul to the Lord. We are all this in vain, crying out to you with tears:

Rejoice, holy prince, sent to strengthen us;

Rejoice, in the image of Christ, called to repentance.

Rejoice, advocate of salvation for those who love you;

Rejoice, those who magnify thee and imitate the shield and the fence.

Rejoice, weak for good consolation;

Rejoice, victorious blessing to all the faithful.

Rejoice, calling with you all those who are in the heavenly abode;

Rejoice, knowing the tears of late repentance of your mother Dragomira.

Rejoice, holy martyr Vyacheslav, prince of the Czech countries.

Oh, marvelous servant of Christ, accept this small prayer of ours as a praise to you from the Orthodox brethren, look upon us who are weak, prone to sin, poorly enlightened, burdened with cares and, standing in heavenly glory before the Throne of the King of Kings, pray for us, Grand Duke: ask, Holy One of God, that we may find His mercy on the Day of Judgment, in joy singing to the Most Holy Trinity: Alleluia.

The name Vyacheslav is of native Russian origin. It is formed from two words - “greater” or “vyache”, which means “better, more” and “glory”. Therefore, literally the name means "more glorious."

Saint Vyacheslav Chesky, date of memory March 17 (Transfer of relics), October 11

He was raised by his grandmother, the holy princess Lyudmila, who from childhood instilled in her grandson faith in the Lord, hope in His will and the desire to always act according to the commandments that the Savior gave us. He received his education from a disciple of St. Methodius, Presbyter Paul.

In 920, Vyacheslav's father, Vratislav, dies, and at the age of 18, the martyr ascends the princely throne. His life was overshadowed by the fact that Dragomir's mother felt hatred for Christianity, it was she who became the culprit of the death of Vyacheslav's grandmother St. Ludmila. For this, he banished Dragomir forever from his life.

As a ruler, Vyacheslav Czech was remembered for the flourishing of Christian foundations. He not only tried to be a Christian himself, but also in state activity, by his decrees, canceled everything that did not correspond to his convictions. For example, he refused the death penalty, considered it unacceptable to use torture. Very many noble dignitaries were dissatisfied with this state of affairs. The believing prince, who lives according to the laws of honor and kindness, seemed objectionable to them, and therefore those close to the court entered into a conspiracy with Vyacheslav's brother Boleslav the First.

In 935, the saint was killed by his own brother and his guards right on the threshold of the temple. In the future, all those who followed Prince Vyacheslav of Czech, who, like him, led a pious lifestyle, were subjected to cruel torture and torment. Nothing is known about the fate of his son Zbraslav.

Hieromartyr Vyacheslav Lukanin, commemorated February 8 (Novomuch.), August 16

Almost ten centuries later, in the Russian state in the city of Perm, a boy will be born, whom his parents will also call Vyacheslav. He grew up very weak and sickly, studying was given to him with great difficulty.

Despite this, Vyacheslav Lukanin strove to enter a religious school, serving the Lord was his only desire, which eventually came true. The Lord gave him a beautiful voice. This talent did not go unnoticed by the teachers of the school. Very often, the young man served on the kliros in the local church, they even began to call him “senior in the choir,” he did so well. He comprehended other sciences with great difficulty, constantly re-taken exams, and devoted all his free time to church singing. In 1989, after graduating from college, he entered the Perm Seminary. But the state of health prevented me from getting a diploma.

However, the leadership of the seminary leaves him at the educational institution as director of the educational choir. In 1901, his talent was appreciated so highly that he was invited to the bishop's choir. A few years later he met a beautiful girl who became his wife - this is Maria Gordeevna Galkina. Soon their daughter was born. She will not be the only child in the family, a few years later Vyacheslav and Maria had 8 more children, three of them died in infancy.

In 1918 he was appointed director of one of the choirs in the Yekaterinburg diocese. It was here, on the territory of the town of Kataysk, that the Red Eagles punitive units were created, which were supposed to instantly respond to any orders of the godless authorities. Those tortures that they applied to those arrested, perhaps, could compete in cruelty with the torment of the first Christians. The detainees were buried alive in the ground, quartered, mocked in every possible way, humiliating human dignity, forced to drink their own blood. And this despite the fact that the "employees" of such a detachment were sometimes not even 20 years old.

On the eve of the bright feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the martyr Vyacheslav and some believers of this town gathered to discuss how best to celebrate the festive Liturgy. The meeting was held in the evening in one of the houses, they lit candles, and a small ray became noticeable because of the curtains from the side of the street where at that time curfew and punishers patrolled the streets. The monsters broke into the house and arrested everyone who was there. In the morning, the believers were taken to the temple and ordered to dig their own graves.

Father Vyacheslav finally asked only to pray in the temple, starting to read the prayer for the dead, he slowly walked towards the temple, at that moment the Krasnoorlovets shot him in the back.

Deacon Vyacheslav Lukanin was canonized in 2002.

Life of St. Vyacheslav, Prince of Bohemia

Saint Vyacheslav came from a princely family that ruled in Bohemia 1 and was the grandson of the holy martyr Ludmila 2 ; his parents - Vratislav 3, Prince of Czech and his wife Dragomira had two more sons besides him: Boleslav and Spytignev and several daughters; Among all, he stood out for his talents and kindness.

When Saint Vyacheslav began to grow up, his father, according to the custom of that time, asked the bishop and priests with all the ecclesiastical to call upon him the blessing of God. Bishop celebrating liturgy in church Holy Mother of God and then placing the youth on the steps of the temple, he blessed him with these words:

- Lord God, Jesus Christ, bless this young man, as if you blessed Your righteous ones - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and crown him, as if you crowned the faithful kings, Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen.

From this particular time, by the grace of God, the lad began to grow and prosper. his grandmother, St. Lyudmila, instructed one priest, her confessor, to teach him Slavic literacy, which the saint very soon mastered completely. Seeing his success, his father sent him to the city of Budec to study Latin and other sciences; in all this he succeeded to the astonishment of his teachers.

But by the will of God, it happened that Prince Vratislav soon died 4 and Saint Vyacheslav, still young in age, entered the throne of his parents. Here, in the rank of ruler, he especially showed his talents: together with his mother, he tried to improve the administration of the country, took care of his family: he saw his sisters marry in neighboring principalities, watched the upbringing of his younger brothers, not missing an opportunity to expand his own knowledge, so that he soon fully studied not only Slavic and Latin, but also Greek literacy, surpassing in this respect any priest or even bishop. God blessed his work, endowing him with wisdom. He diligently tried to please God, took care of the poor, fed them, received the strange according to the word of the Gospel: " for I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; was a stranger and you accepted me"(Matthew 25:35), revered the clergy, built and decorated churches, treated everyone with love, both rich and poor, and throughout his short life he thought only of the good.

But the devil, the primordial enemy of the human race, even now tried in every possible way to sow confusion: some evil-minded nobles wanted to take advantage of the saint's youth, since after the death of his father he remained only eighteen years old. And so, at first they began to restore Prince Vyacheslav against his mother, saying that she had killed his grandmother, Saint Lyudmila, and was plotting against him. Vyacheslav at first believed these words and sent his mother to the city of Budec, but soon remembered the words of the Apostle Paul: " Honor thy father and mother, this is the first commandment with a promise"(Eph. 6:2); brought his mother back to his house and repented with bitter tears, saying:

“Lord, my God, do not impute this to me as a sin,” and he repeated the words of the Psalmist: Do not remember the sins of my youth and my crimes"(Ps. 24:7).

From that time on, he honored his mother in every possible way, so that she rejoiced at his piety and kindness: he fed the crippled, took care of widows and orphans, redeemed the prisoners, did good to everyone, and the name of the good and righteous Prince Vyacheslav was glorified everywhere.

Malicious nobles, seeing that their plans failed due to the mind and good morals of the saint, began to revolt against him his brother - Boleslav, who, as the youngest, had to obey Vyacheslav. They inspired Boleslav that Prince Vyacheslav, with his advisers and his mother, were plotting to ruin him, and advised him to kill the holy prince in order to save his life and take the princely throne himself. These malicious advice of seducers confused Boleslav's mind and he began to think about the death of his brother, just as almost a hundred years later 5 Svyatopolk the Accursed, wanting to be sovereign in the Russian land, decided to beat his brothers.

Wanting to fulfill his criminal intention, Boleslav invited his brother to his place for the consecration of the church, which was to take place on Sunday, with which the celebration of the memory of Saints Cosmas and Damian coincided. Saint Vyacheslav, having arrived and listened to the holy liturgy, wanted to return back to Prague 6, but Boleslav began to restrain him, begging him not to offend him by refusing the treat he had prepared. The saint agreed to stay, although when he went out into the courtyard of the Boleslavs, the servants warned him about his brother's plans. The saint did not believe this, placing all his hope in God. All that day they spent together in joy; meanwhile, at night, the villains gathered in the courtyard of one of the conspirators, named Gnievysy, and, together with Boleslav, were considering how they could kill St. Vyacheslav, and decided to attack him as soon as he got up and went to matins, because they knew that, due to his piety, the saint would not miss the service. And their assumptions came true: as soon as the bell was heard for matins, Vyacheslav immediately got up with the words:

“Glory to Thee, O Lord my God, for Thou hast given me light and I shall live until this morning.

Then he dressed and, having washed himself, went to church; Boleslav caught up with him at the gate of the house. The saint turned around and said:

- Greetings, brother; good yesterday...

But he did not have time to finish his speech, when Boleslav, at the instigation of the devil, drew his sword from its scabbard and hit his brother on the head with it, saying:

“Today I want to treat you even better.

Vyacheslav exclaimed:

"Brother, what are you thinking?"

And seizing him and throwing him to the ground, he asked:

“My brother, what harm have I done to you?

But then one of the conspirators ran up and struck the saint in the hand. Then he, leaving Boleslav, ran to the church. The conspirators rushed after him and two of them - Chesta and Tira - hacked him to death at the very doors of the church, and the third - Gnevysa - pierced him with a sword in the ribs. The blessed one expired with the words:

“Lord, into Your hands I commit my spirit.

After the murder of the prince, the villains began to beat his squad, rob and expel all those whom Saint Vyacheslav sheltered in his house; the conspirator Tir began to advise Boleslav to attack his mother in order to immediately get rid of both his brother and his mother, but he replied that he would still have time, since she had nowhere to hide.

The conspirators chopped up the body of Saint Vyacheslav and threw it away without burial, only some priest covered it with a veil. At that time, the saint's mother, having heard about his murder, rushed to look for him, and, seeing his chopped-up remains, she burst into bitter tears. She gathered all the parts of his body and, not daring to take them to her, immediately, in the courtyard of the priest of this church, washed, dressed, and then they took him to the church and laid him there. Having paid this last debt to her martyred son, the mother of Saint Vyacheslav, fleeing death, took refuge in the country of the Croats 7, so that when Boleslav took it into his head to send assassins to her, they could no longer find her.

The remains of the blessed prince were still in the church for some time, awaiting burial, until finally they allowed a priest to be called to perform the funeral service for the holy martyr and bury him. And his blood, shed at the doors of the church, no matter how hard they tried, could not be washed away. After the expiration of three days, she herself miraculously disappeared 8 .

Soon the fratricide Boleslav realized his grave sin and wept bitterly, repenting and saying:

- I have sinned, and I know my sin and my iniquities, God help me a sinner.

He sent priests and his associates to transfer the relics of St. Vyacheslav to the capital city of Prague, and they were honorably placed on the right side of the altar in the church of St. Vitus, which the saint himself created. ________________________________________________________________________

1 The Czech Republic occupies the Central European plateau, surrounded on almost all sides by mountains and irrigated by the Laba (Elbe) River with its tributaries. In distant antiquity, this country was occupied by the Celtic people - Boii, from which it bears another name - Bohemia. Shortly before R.Kh. the Boii were expelled by the Germans, the Marcomanni, who waged long wars with the Romans and finally disappeared in the middle of the 5th century; soon after that, the Slavic tribes of the Czechs probably settled in the deserted country, after which the country was nicknamed the Czech Republic. When the holy brothers, Cyril and Methodius, spread Christianity in the Slavic countries - Moravia and Pannonia, then the Czechs were also baptized by them, and they introduced worship in the Slavic language; Christianity among the Czechs spread very strongly and soon they had holy ascetics; in the Orthodox Church are known: Blessed Ludmila, Saint Vyacheslav and the Monk Procopius, who lived already in the 11th century (his memory is celebrated on September 16). But even before the baptism of the Czechs by the holy first teachers of the Slavs, German missionaries also appeared in the Czech Republic, who began to spread worship in Latin, and since they enjoyed the patronage of powerful German states neighboring the Czechs, over time they managed to completely supplant the Slavic worship, which is already in the XI century. Saint Procopius had to be defended, although in some places it continued to be preserved even later.
