Green Christmastide rituals in Rus'. Christmas traditions in Rus'. How Green Christmas time was celebrated in Rus'

Trinity is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter, so sometimes this holiday is called Pentecost and this year falls on May 31st. Celebrating the Trinity began in the 4th century, when the dogma of the Trinity was finally approved at the II Council of Constantinople: the one God exists in three persons - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Klechalnaya week

Trinity is a very beautiful holiday. Houses and temples are decorated with branches, grass, flowers. And it is no coincidence. Greenery, flowers symbolize life. This is how people express their joy and gratitude to God for the fact that He has revived them through baptism into a new life.

They spent Trinity in the air, in the forest, in general, in nature. The festivities were cheerful, noisy. In the morning they baked a loaf and called the guests, presenting them with wreaths of herbs. IN folk tradition Trinity festivities are directly related to wedding ceremonies, so they were extremely popular among young people.

In Ukraine, the last three days before the Trinity were called the Klechalnaya or Mermaid Week, and the three days after it were called the Green Holidays. Our ancestors called this time the triumph of spring on the threshold of summer.

Most popular beliefs are associated with mermaids, and the Thursday before Trinity was considered the mermaid Easter. According to popular belief, on their Easter, mermaids came out of the water and looked to see if people honored them. If someone worked, they could send trouble to the crops. On Thursday, at the boundary of his field, the head of the family left loaves of bread for the mermaids, and the housewives put a hot loaf on the windowsill so that the mermaids could get enough of its smell.

In the Kiev region on Rusal Thursday at sunrise, the girls went to the rye field, taking with them bread baked from rye flour and holy water. In the field, they divided the loaf equally, then each went to the father's boundary and left a piece of bread there for the mavka: so that she would give birth to rye. In the Poltava region, on this day, the girls secretly carried wreaths for the mawks to the forest, so that they would send suitors to them.

We decorate the house

On Trinity, there is a custom to decorate the house with calamus branches. Several ancient agricultural rites are associated with this. On Green Holidays, as a rule, rye blooms. To reap a good harvest, it was necessary to protect oneself from evil spirits. They hid from them, hiding behind green branches. On the eve of the Holy Trinity, young women, girls and children went to the grove and meadow to collect more fragrant herbs: thyme, wormwood, fern, lovage and, of course, calamus. In the evening, the whole family decorated the house with branches of maple, linden, ash, birch, alder or poplar.

It was strictly forbidden to break the willow, because this tree has already paid tribute to God and people on Palm Sunday. In addition to rooms, doors, shutters, fences and pens for livestock were landscaped. Young trees and branches cut down on this day were called “klechannyam”. Hence the name of the week - Klechalnaya (it was also called Grandfather).

It was a great sin not to decorate the house. Ancestors believed that on Trinity the souls of dead relatives fly to the living and hide in the branches. All attention was paid to doors, walls of houses and shutters - they were densely covered with linden branches.

The floors in the house were covered with herbs: calamus, thyme, wormwood and lovage. Cornflowers and mint were placed behind the icons. A candle or lamp was lit in front of the images. On Klechalnaya Saturday there was a custom to weave wreaths. A wreath woven from fresh flowers, according to popular belief, had the power of a talisman.

On Grandfather's Saturday, they blessed milk, cheese, and rolls in the church and carried gifts to the cemetery to treat each other in memory of the dead. It has long been a custom in Ukraine to commemorate the dead on the eve of major religious holidays. Trinity is no exception. Ancestors believed that when rye blossoms, the dead wake up. So that nothing bad happens at this time, people asked for help from deceased relatives. In gratitude for the protection, it was supposed to celebrate a funeral feast on the graves this Saturday.

In the morning people dressed festively and went to church. The girls were especially elegant - they complemented the traditional white shirts, beads and ribbons with wreaths of flowers and fragrant herbs. In addition, each girl carried in her hands a bouquet of wormwood, periwinkle or lovage.

On Trinity, churches were also decorated with herbs and green branches. This was done in honor of the fact that the Holy Spirit gave life to everything created by God. This custom was borrowed from the Jews. So, in Ukraine in the century before last, people carried herbs to the church. In the middle of the bouquet, the Orthodox placed a triple candle, which was supposed to burn during the entire service. The cinder was not thrown away, but kept. It was given into the hands of the dying to relieve suffering. Fragrant green herbs were used as amulets.

After mass, everyone gathered near the church, at a high wooden pole dug into the ground. The pole was necessarily decorated with branches and flowers.
Traditionally, on this day, dishes were prepared from eggs, dairy products and herbs: salad from young cabbage, salad from dandelion leaves, eggs chopped with garlic, potato pancakes and omelettes with greens, kutya and kolivo (for a funeral dinner), greechaniki, stewed fish and chicken, baked meat, various pancakes and pancakes, pies and loaves decorated with herbs. Of the drinks, jelly and vodka were popular.

This dish has long been considered mandatory on the festive table during the "green holidays".

Green Christmastide is the week preceding. At times, this is the name of the days starting from Thursday in the Semitsky week and ending on Thursday in the Trinity week. Sometimes this is the name of the days starting with the Ascension and ending with the Nettle Spell.

As the ancient Slavs imagined, during such Christmas time they appeared. Also, these Svyatki were considered something like a boundary between the calendar spring and the span, since the Trinity itself and the week that followed it were considered the end of spring. When Peter's day came on July 12, people believed that nature was beginning to turn closer to winter. As the culmination of the passing Christmas time, the day was celebrated on which the summer solstice was scheduled, and this day was also called St. John's Day. The duration of such a day was determined, and the Trinity was considered early. The duration of the Green Christmastide reached almost the entire month. When the Trinity was late, they lasted a couple of weeks.

How Green Christmas time was celebrated in Rus'

The time of Green Christmastide was filled with a variety of rituals intended for the implementation of economic affairs. This concerned cattle-breeding and agricultural activities. In particular, a rite was observed, called "walking in the zhito" and considered very characteristic of that era. It was determined by the growth of bread observed on Midsummer Day. Usually then the girls gathered in small groups and examined the cereal crops in the fields. When they made their rounds, they gathered in the meadow, lit a fire, cooked scrambled eggs and regaled themselves with pies. Spoons at the end of the meal with eggshells were thrown up and sentenced so that the rye could grow. They themselves tumbled right on the grass. And various rituals were also performed to prevent hail, possible drought, and other dangers that could harm crop yields. The peasants organized prayer services with water blessing procedures, doused human graves with water, especially if the dead died unnaturally, such as drowned people.

There were also ceremonies regarding the safety and health of animals. In our country, on this holiday, a ceremony was performed crowning cattle. The shepherd boy had to bring a couple of wreaths for the hostess. The first wreath was hung on cow horns. The next wreath was put on the hostess herself, and magical actions were performed. And then the wreaths were kept in a barn, they could be used for the purpose of veterinary treatment. When Peter's day came, it was necessary to treat the shepherds, since this holiday was considered a shepherd's holiday.

Green Christmas time was considered by people as a transitional life stage of the nature surrounding people. Then there were a lot of prohibitions with amulets, the purpose of which was protection from evil spirits, from witches who rampaged on Ivan's Day. Sometimes people called this day witches.

The time of Green Christmas time with their initial period was associated with the fact that the souls of ancestors were on earth. And when cereal crops were in bloom, this time seemed auspicious to contact with other worlds. Sometimes in the villages (in the south-west of the country) they believed in the liberation dead soul Saturday for Trinity. They left this land of the soul to the Trinity itself. In certain provinces, it was believed that souls turn into birds and sit on birch branches that were taken down to the houses. They believed in the conversations of souls with each other and in the possibility of hearing such conversations everywhere, anywhere. Also these days in the villages they organized a commemoration of each deceased - he was held:

  • in the church,
  • in cemeteries.

In addition, as the Russians believed, Green Christmastide directly related to the appearance of mermaids, which were considered the souls of those girls and young children who died. These souls were present among people during Trinity Saturday, swaying on birch branches or hiding in the rye. They left the souls of the world when the Petrovsky conspiracy came. This was the first Sunday after Pentecost began. And when the mermaids left, a ceremony called "seeing off the mermaids" was performed.

During the Green Christmas time, rites were performed regarding initiation, that is, initiation. The transfer of children was implied adolescence in youth, having a marriageable age. Of the rites, the brightest were those that related to girlish meals taking place in the meadow, on Trinity, or on the days dedicated to Agrafena bathing. Often such ceremonies coincided with the rites of going to the zhito. Meals were held, songs were sung, girlish unions were concluded, where those girls who reached the age suitable for marriage entered. As a symbol of such a union, a rite relating to "cumulation" was considered. There were forest gatherings of girls, where they approached wreaths hanging on a tree. There were also crosses with colored eggs, through which it was necessary to kiss. Presents were exchanged and many turned into godfathers. And then a feast was arranged, where the guys were invited. Nepotism usually took place a week later, when the Petrovsky conspiracy began.

When rituals were performed at Green Christmas time, attention was paid to erotica and marriage. The girls were engaged in throwing wreaths into the water, began to wonder if they would get married, and performed various magical rituals. For example, a harrow was burned, a furrow was drawn from one's own house to the dwelling of the narrowed one, and so on. All this brought a possible matchmaking closer. Girls and boys spent a lot of time with each other. There were more and more joint festivities, the closer Ivanov approached, as well as Peter's day. Moreover, the games became almost erotic. There was a joint bathing in the reservoirs, although at any other time it was considered unworthy. There were jumps over lit bonfires, large meals were arranged, which could end with joint overnight stays. Also, young people beat their peers with nettle branches when the Petrovsky charm came and this symbolized an erotic game. Various songs were sung, the content of which turned out to be quite often obscenely erotic.

Christmas games

The most colorful reflection of the contained erotica turned out in the ongoing games. Usually they played "weddings". Such amusements were popular everywhere in Rus' - not only among young beauties, but also among those women who were already married. For this, a "groom" was appointed, and a "bride" was also appointed. And then it was necessary to lose every wedding stage - up to the wedding night, despite the fact that everyone around was watching and having fun. Also, the drawing of the wedding theme was carried out thanks to paired mythological characters. One of them was a symbol of the masculine, and the other character symbolized the feminine. For example, we could talk about Semik and Semichikha. People made them stuffed from straw material, decorated with phallic symbols and left them overnight. In the morning, it was necessary to ask the scarecrows about how their night went. It often happened that such entertainments became unbridled outrages, where they used foul language, showed obscene gestures, sang shameful songs. When the green Christmas time ended, the people who participated in them went to church to pray that God would forgive them.

Green Christmastide (Rusal Week)

Green Svyatki (Rusal Week)- the last week of astronomical spring.

Green Christmas time is a cheerful spring holiday. It was celebrated in groves, forests, glades, on the banks of rivers - they celebrated it cheerfully and freely. These days were considered among the Slavs days of darkness.

These days, the ancient Slavs dressed up birches, danced round dances, sang songs, played burners, and burned bonfires. Holiday tables were laid in a birch grove, under birch trees, decorated with multi-colored ribbons.

In Green Christmas time, as well as in winter Christmas time, the ancient Slavs wondered, made wishes, turned to the Forces of Nature with requests. The sky is open these days.

Girls wondered about marriage, suitors, weaved wreaths and threw them into the water. The future was determined by the movement of the wreath in the water. Than the wreath will be washed ashore, she will soon get married.

The cities also celebrated Green Christmas time. Fairs were organized on a large field, where various treats were sold, carousels were arranged.

At the Rusal Week did not bathe. These days are dedicated to the goddesses of rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

There are many popular beliefs about mermaids:

Mermaids- these are the essences of the invisible world, lovely girls with pale, sad faces, with wavy, thick, long hair, cold hands and almost transparent body. They live in rivers, meadows and forests. Mermaids are women who died an untimely death, most often girls who drowned or died before marriage.

A person can see mermaids only during the Mermaid Week, the rest of the time they are invisible to people.

Mermaids spend most of their time by the water - rivers, lakes, wells. Mermaids love to sit on bridges, coastal stones, but when they see a person, they disappear into the water.

At night, mermaids can gather in the fields and dance, helping the growth of cereals. But if during the Rusal Week the owner does not rest, but works, all his crops can be trampled.

Mermaids can tangle nets and bind trees.

At night, mermaids lure men into the forest or into the water, calling them by name, in order to destroy them later. Meeting people with mermaids is dangerous and almost always leads to death.

We didn't swim during Rusal Week. And if they swam, then at first they threw wormwood into the water - a protective agent against mermaids.

On the Mermaid Week, mermaids have weddings - on the rivers, ponds and lakes you can hear their laughter and splashing of water.

Throughout the Mermaid Week, people hang threads, yarn, towels on bushes and trees to appease the mermaids. They also leave them bread, salt and other food at the crossroads, in the forest, in the fields, along the banks of rivers and lakes.

Mermaids can whistle, laugh, and with this they lure people into the forest. The mermaids make a lost man dance with them until he dies of fatigue. For their dances, mermaids trample a circle around a large tree. If circles of trampled grass appeared in the clearings, around the trees and in the fields, it means that the mermaids staged their dances.

At the end of Mermaid Week, mermaids gather on large oaks or other trees, have fun, laugh, and then disappear.

Attention!

Sites and blogs have appeared on the Internet that are not our official sites, but use our name. Be careful. Fraudsters use our name, our email addresses for their mailing lists, information from our books and our websites. Using our name, they drag people into various magical forums and deceive (give advice and recommendations that can harm, or lure out money for magical rituals, making amulets and teaching magic).

On our sites, we do not provide links to magical forums or sites of magical healers. We do not participate in any forums. We do not give consultations by phone, we do not have time for this.

Note! We are not engaged in healing and magic, we do not make or sell talismans and amulets. We do not engage in magical and healing practices at all, we have not offered and do not offer such services.

The only direction of our work is correspondence consultations in writing, training through an esoteric club and writing books.

Sometimes people write to us that on some sites they saw information that we allegedly deceived someone - they took money for healing sessions or making amulets. We officially declare that this is slander, not true. In all our lives, we have never deceived anyone. On the pages of our site, in the materials of the club, we always write that you need to be an honest decent person. For us, an honest name is not an empty phrase.

People who write slander about us are guided by the basest motives - envy, greed, they have black souls. The time has come when slander pays well. Now many are ready to sell their homeland for three kopecks, and it is even easier to engage in slandering decent people. People who write slander do not understand that they are seriously worsening their karma, worsening their fate and the fate of their loved ones. It is pointless to talk with such people about conscience, about faith in God. They do not believe in God, because a believer will never make a deal with his conscience, he will never engage in deceit, slander, and fraud.

There are a lot of scammers, pseudo-magicians, charlatans, envious people, people without conscience and honor, hungry for money. The police and other regulatory agencies are not yet able to cope with the increasing influx of "Cheat for profit" insanity.

So please be careful!

Sincerely, Oleg and Valentina Svetovid

Holy Trinity Day is a great Christian holiday, but its traditions are rooted in paganism. And, as often happens, ancient magic and Orthodox rites intertwined in the popular mind. So powerful rituals, divination, conspiracies were born. In 2017 Trinity falls on June 4.

Family tree. Rite for Parents' Saturday

The eve of the holiday - Parental Saturday: the only day of the year when the church prays for the souls of people who died unbaptized.

On Parental Saturday, plant a family tree: a seedling in a summer cottage or an indoor perennial plant, such as a ficus. At the bottom of a hole or pot, put a little thing related to your family: an inexpensive piece of jewelry that belonged to your mother or grandmother, a fragment of a saucer from a family service, an old button. If nothing of the kind is found, bring a handful of earth from the place where you or someone from the older generation of your relatives spent your childhood, youth. Attention: in no case do not put earth from the grave under the tree - nothing from the cemetery can be brought into the house or garden!

For the first time, you need to water the family tree with charmed water. Take a spring or dial from the tap just after midnight, put both palms on a vessel of water and start calling the names of all the ancestors that you remember. Having named the name, each time say: "Peace be with you and eternal salvation." Repeat the rite of incantation of water every month on the full moon: the souls of your departed will receive relief, and you will receive the support of the family.

Green Christmas time

Long before the adoption of Christianity in early June, festivities were held in Rus' associated with the veneration of mother earth. They were called "green" or "emerald" days, hence the popular name of Trinity Day - Green Christmastide.

According to popular beliefs, the earth should not be disturbed on Green Christmastide - plant or transplant plants, dig and loosen, remove weeds. Let the birthday land rest, then it will be favorable to man.

On the Trinity in the early morning, at dawn, they utter a conspiracy for good luck and success in business: “I will get up, pray, go out, cross myself, climb a high mountain, look around on all four sides. As on the eastern side, in a green meadow, a black horse grazes, restlessly wild and violent. No one saddled him, no one rode him, that horse did not know stirrups-reins. I will tame that horse, and he will walk obediently under me, carry me where I want. My will is strong, my word is true. Amen".

Love spell on the Trinity

And in order to bewitch her beloved, on Trinity Day, a woman collects grass, weaves a small wreath from it and, going to bed, puts it under her pillow with a slander: “As these herbs twisted and intertwined into a wreath, so let the servant of God (name) around me, the servants of God (name), twists and turns, like a wreath will wither and dry, so let it dry and grieve for me, God's servant(name), does not eat food, does not drink drink, does not go on a spree; at a feast, he or at a conversation, in a field or in a house - I would not go out of his mind-mind. Be my words strong and sculpting, stronger than stone and damask steel, a sharp knife and a greyhound spear. And the key to my words and affirmation, and the fortress is strong, and the strength is strong in the heavenly heights, and the castle is in the depths of the sea. Now and forever and forever and ever. Amen".

Birch magic for Trinity

The birch is considered the main symbol of the Trinity - all kinds of rituals are associated with it. The floors in the huts were covered with leaves, the gates, thresholds, windows and icons were decorated with bunches of birch twigs. Often, branches of apple, mountain ash, maple, and willow were added to birch trees. But in no case did they take branches of coniferous trees (they symbolize death) and aspens (this is a vampire tree). It was believed that birch, having absorbed the energy of the awakened earth, would protect against evil forces, give health, prosperity, save and increase the new crop.

On the feast of the Trinity, you can perform a ritual for the fulfillment of a cherished desire. You need to approach a young birch tree, hug it, then pull the branch towards you and ask the birch tree for help, say your desire aloud, weaving a pigtail from the thinnest branches of the tree.

In a few days it is worth visiting “your” birch: if the pigtail is intact, the dream will certainly come true, if it is unraveled, alas. By the way, if, while walking in a forest or a park, you see such braided branches - do not touch! Maybe someone made a wish, or maybe left a misfortune on the birch. Whoever undoes such a pigtail will kill another's luck or take on other people's hardships.

The Trinity should be spent cheerfully, joyfully: whoever is sad or busy on this day - Heaven is angry.

You should definitely bake or buy a loaf. This is a traditional wedding bread, necessarily round - in the shape of the sun, the highest Slavic deity. His patronage sought to receive a young family - that's why they served "sunny" bread at the wedding, round and ruddy.

In the old days, specially invited people baked a loaf - most often women, certainly married and having children, that is, happy in family life. It turned out that their families were blessed by God, and through them the blessing is transmitted to the young family. While kneading the dough, the women sang special ritual songs, recited prayers and slander calling on the Lord to come down from heaven and help bake the loaf. So it is best that your loaf for the feast of the Holy Trinity is baked by a woman (or bought for you in a bakery), happy in marriage. Instead of a loaf, it is quite possible to serve a round yeast pie.

Marriageable girls and single ladies should take a few pieces of a loaf, wrap it in a clean rag, read the prayer “Our Father” over the bundle and ask the Lord (or Higher powers) with all their hearts for an early meeting with their betrothed. Put the bundle behind the icon or in a place where no one will see or touch it. Store until the wedding to crush and add crumbs to wedding cakes - then the family will be strong.
